Dixon) Rome —(£)— The fancy, marble pillared training grounds where Mussolini taught his elite black shirts how to conquer for Fascism now is a rough, tough GI testing field where Uncle Sam is turning out some 900 infantrymen a week for the final battle with Germany. Traveling audit committees are combating rear headquarters, quartermaster depots, inactive an tiaircraft outfits and almost every units behind the front lines for able-bodied men. The new candidates pour into the infantry conversion training center at the rate of 900 a week for a stiff 12-week course covering 32 subjects, ranging from military courtesy and discipline to riot du ty.” Some of the budding infantry men, most of whom were pulled out of jobs in which normally they never would have seen the front, like it and some don’t. When Lt. Gen. Joseph T. Mc Narney, deputy to the Supreme Al lied Commander in the Mediter ranean, visited the center for the formal dedication, one highrank ing officer asked a toiling private officer asked a toiling private what he thought of the idea. The answer was “when you gotta, you gotta, sir.” Most of the men realize that if they are going into the line they had better find out what goes on up there and learn to use all the weapons available. V The center is under the com mand of Erig. Gen. L. J. Jaynes, an amiable and hardworking of ficer who has adapted Mussolini’! setup to his needs and supplied a good many new wrinkles. Already 6,000 men have gone from the center to the front. Included in this number were 800 men who formerly were Army cooks. “Those 800 cooks made damned good soldiers,” General Jaynes said. Personnel experts comb Army • records for candidates and make personal visits to the units involv ed. Skilled persons hard to re place are not selected. Since Ger man planes are a rarity in this theater a good many antiairoifcft gunners have been converted ta infantry. The school started early in De cember. Sixty per cent of the in structors have had frontline serv ice. \Vatching battlewise sergeants and corporals tell new men about the tricks of German booby-trap experts or the way to distinguish the sound of a German machine gun, it seems they have been teaching all their lives. They know how serious it is and their stu dents pay strict attention. McNarney, in dedicating the cen ter pointed out that 1,600.000 men already have been discharged from the Army and said the number of physically fit young men in the States not in war Jobs is being depleted.” In addition to the standard use of infantry weapons subjects taught at the school include mines and boobytraps, mortars, close combat, infiltration, village fight ing, concealment and camouflage, taking fortifications, operation of patrols, attack practice tactics against crowds and mobs, patrols and patrolling a captured town and “crack and thump.” Crack and thump” is a course in which infantrymen are taught to judge the approximate positron of an enemy by listening to the crack of his gun and the thump of the bullets arriving. In the infiltration course the in fantrymen must crawl 100 yards with full equipment, hugging the ground to avoid continuous bursts of machinegun fire over head. Ev ery minute or two a half pound stick of TNT blows up in some part of the field to simulate an enemy shell. At the end of the course is a ditch from which the tired soldiers must dash to bayonet a stuffed bag 25 yards beyond. Sergeant Hilary Hanify, New York City, a tough antiaircraft gunner with 16 months service over seas in Sicily, North Africa and Italy, came in first as General McNarney watched and wasn’t even breathing hard. Secretary of War Stimson sent McNarney congratulations on the dedication of the center and said: “To speed the victory it is now vital that every man should serve where he is most needed.” CITY COMMITTEE INSPECTS MARKET City Manager A. C. Nichols, City Engineer J. A. Loughlin and a City Council committee yesterday inspected the City Market, now un dergoing renovations and mainte nance work in order to facilitate better service and comply with Board of Health regulations on the handling of poultry and fish.
