AWARDED PURPLE HEART Pvt. Thomas D. Gore, of Wil mington, is convalescing at Mc Closky General hospital. Temple, Tex., after being seriously wound ed while on overseas duty with the Signal Corps. Pvt. Gore, who made his home here with his sister, Mrs. V. L. Smith, 2117 Princess Place, was employed by the North Carolina Shipbuilding Co., before his in duction into the Army in June 1942. Going overseas in March 1944, he participated in the Allied invasion of Normandy. AWARDED BRONZE STAR Pfc. James Hayes, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Hayes, of Rocky Point, has been cited for bravery and has received the Bronze Star medal for meritorious achieve ment in connection with mili tary operations in Germany on December 24, while fighting with the 415th infantry. The citation reads in part: âWhile on duty operating an observation post of the intelli gence and reconnaissance pla toon, Pvt. Hayes received a re quest by telephone from the ar tillery unit attached to his regi ment for him to act as forward observer. Despite the fact that he had never before acted as for ward observer, Pvt. Hayes, with two other men, performed the job daringly and intelligently. Detecting their position, the enemy immediately began regis tering artillery fire on the men, but they courageously continued their task in the face of the heavy fire and at great risk to their lives. âPvt. Hayes valiantly stayed at his post directing the fire until the enemy gun position had been silenced. His courage, ingenuity and devotion to duty in skillfully performing a task totally un familiar to him are in keeping with the finest traditions of the armed forces of the United States and reflect the highest credit on Pvt. Hayes and the military ser vice.ââ PURPLE HEART Sgt. Thomas S. Maultsby, Jr., 26, son of Mr. and M^s. T. S. Maultsby, 214 Wrightsville ave nue, has arrived at the Army Air Forces Redistribution Sta tion in Miami Beach for reassign ment after a tour of duty over seas. Sgt. Maultsby, a B-17 Flying Fortress gunner, was in jured in his first mission over enemy-occupied territory and has been awarded the Purple Heart. The indictment, opened in Fed eral court by Judge Alfred C.
