S. 90TH DIVI SION, In Germany, March 14.— (U.R) —The German lieutenant sat in * prisoner of war enclosure and repeated over and over “it was a beautiful place, Brooklyn.” On his chest he wore the iron cross; on his finger the class ring af Fordham University. Nine years ago this same offi cer, Hans Detels, sat in a little room overlooking the East river Brooklyn, and wondered about his future. In those days he didn’t realize that future would make him a. prisoner of war in his na tive land of an invading army from America—where he got edu cation, earned money, played on sunny beaches and found love. The slim, blond, 40-year-old De- ! -els was captured by the 90th Division near the Rhine. “I left my home in Hamburg when I was 18 and went to the United States for adventure,” he said. “I earned enough money working for a cabinet company to get an education at Brooklyn Academy. In my spare time I taught gymnastics to German boys at the Ninth street YMCA. “I remember Sunday afternoons when friends and I used to prac tice handstands out on the beach at far Rockaway.” Detels drew two snapshots from lis wallet remarking, “this one s New York as it looked from my window. There is me upside down an the beach.” Detels said he enrolled at Ford ham in 1932. He recalled the ex citing football seasons but didn't remember the players. He graduated from Fordham and returned to Germany in 1937 to study medicine at Hamburg and Vienna. He was drafted into the Wehrmacht and wounded on the , Russian front in 1942. Later he saw service in Norway and France. He shyly drew another snapshot from his wallet and showed a picture of his former sweetheart whom he met while attending Fordham. He said her name was Anna Lo Monaca, Brooklyn. “It is a long time since I have seen Anna,” he said. “I heard Erom her last in August and De cember and I know she will be nappy to learn that I am still alive. Maybe some day I will come back to her.” -V About 13 per cent of the clothing and equipment issued to troops ov erseas is 'clothing which has been reclaimed at overseas repair de pots.
