Itx-circus Horse Facing Cool Reception At ‘Mat’ By ED CREAGH NEW YORK. March 28. — (A>) — When White Ghost, a Wagner-lov ing circus horse, sets hoof on the Metropolitan Opera house stage Saturday night, he is likely to find the welcome mat rolled up and stowed away. It's not that the “Met” is snooty about his sawdust background. It’s just that some sensitive toes were trod on when Robert Ringling pre sented White Ghost—one of Ring ling Brothers’ famed Tennessee walking horses—to Soprano Helen Traubel. "Now you'll have a real mount instead of one of those sorry-look ing nags,” said Ringling, a Chi cago Opera singer himself before he became president , of the circus. Miss Traubel. who leads a horse on stage in “Goetterdaemmerung,” was delighted. Not so the Opera Association. ‘What sorry-looking nags?” de ■ manded a “Met” spokesman. “Our I horses have been better this year 3 than ever, and the black one Miss i Traubel leads is a ycung, healthy 1 an mal. Nag, indeed!” | One reason for the house's sen | sitivity is that a horse refused to face the audience in a performance of “Boris Goudonov” last season, forcing Armand Tokatyan to sing the role of Dimitri while riding backwards. Miss Traubel. an old hand with horses during her girlhood in St. Louis, said today she was convinc ed that the white steed’s debut would dispel any prejudice againsl him. “Mr. Ringling has been singing Wagner to him all winter in Flori da,” she explained, “so I expect him, unlike some of the horses 1 have used, to behave perfectly. 11 wouldn’t surprise me if he knew the cues.” White Ghost will rejoin the cir cus when he isn’t helping Miss Traubel sing Bruennhilde. There’s really no place for a horse, even a walking horse in an apartment, his new owmer said. -V Forrestal Declares Navy May Seek Reinstatement Of Cancelled Ship Plans WASHINGTON, March 28.—— Secretary Forrestal said today the Navy may seek reinstatement of part of the ship construction program which was reduced yes terday. Forrestal said the order cancel ling 72 of the 84 ships of all types projected earlier this year originat ed with War Mobilization Director James F. Byrnes, who was “so conscious of the impact of the program on manpower, that on the basis of relative demand he felt it was not wise to start.” While the Navy “May disagree,” Forrestal said, “somebody has to weigh competing demands on the national economy.” The Secretary said the initial program of 84 ships was inaugur ated on the basis of “insurance,” because "we do not know at what point Japan can implement a dam aging attack on the fleet.” IT__ Public Passover Rites Held In Aachen for the First Times Since 1938 ADVANCED HEADQUARTERS U. Italian Patriots Ordered To Stand-by ForU.S. Call ROME, arch 28.—UP>—Gen. Mark W. Clark, indicating that large scale Allied action on the stalema ted Italian battle front was in pros pect, today ordered patriots in northern Italy to be ready at a “moment’s notice’’ to aid his armies. . The patriots “will be called upon to be of specific assistance to my armies shortly,” the com | mander of the Allied 15th Army Group said. As Clark broadcast his message the Long Italian front was quiet except for a few patrol clashes. Patriots in the Brenner Pass and along the rail lines north of Bo logna leading to the pass were urg ed to prepare immediately for sabotaging the German escape routes. The Allied commander advised patriots not to take on new re cruits because, he said, many Italians “will try to join the win ning side with suddenly acquired enthusiasm’’ when the end ap proaches. Clark hinted at ideological dif ferences among the patriots in northern Italy, urging that there be “no political discord.” Clark in concluding told the patriots that “more detailed in structions will follow in due time.” -V In 1900, 17 per cent of the U.
