HEADQUARTERS, 13TH AAF, SOUTHWEST PACFIC.—Flying in support of our ground forces fight ing in the Philippines, Second Lieu tenant Dirk Swart, 109 Keaton Ave nue, Wilmington, pilot in the “Bomber Barons” of the 13th AAF, the jungle air force, has participat ed in ten attacks against strongly fortified enemy airfields and instal lations on Cebu, Negros and Min danao islands. With the “Fightin’ 13th,” he help ed destroy Jap fighters and bomb ers on the ground and fire vital supply dumps and gasoline storage facilities. Lieutenant Swart is the husband of Mrs. Vivian Swart. Prior to entering the service in October, 1942, he attended Holland High school. WINS BRONZ STAR Staff Sergeant Jessie Barefoot, son of Mrs. R. M, Johnson, and the late Mr. Barefoot, 11514 Dock street, serving with an infantry regiment has been awarded the Bronze Star, for meritorious ach ievement from July 29, 1944 to November, in BAREFOOT France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. Sgt. Bare foot distinguished himself by out standing performance of duty as a squad leader during a difficult period of military operations. The citation accompanying the award reads in part: “His soldierly attri butes and demonstrated fortitude in the face of handicaps have been deciding factors in the successful accomplishment of all tasks assign ed him. His coolness under fire, devotion to duty and loyalty to hi* leaders have contributed to the combat achievements of his unit.” Once reported missing in action, Sgt. Barefoot was last heard from in Germany. -v-- A Five German Swimmers, I Trained in Demolition, Foiled in Bridge blast AT A RHINE RIVER BRIDGE HEAD, March 18— (Delayed by censor)—{/P)—Four German swim mers in waterproof suits and their leader, an SS lieutenant, were cap tured during an unsuccessful at tempt last night to blow up some American bridges across the Rhine in the Remagen sector. Each had time charges of ex plosives set to go off at 1 a.m. American troops on the east bank of the Rhine caught the Germans and their raft-like charges in the glare of searchlights and opened up with machineguns. One charge wag exploded in the river and the others were upset. The German officer and one wounded man were captured by Lt. Kenneth Farrens, Cheyenne, 'Jl Wyo.
