Specialities took the buying plaj in today’s brief stock marker . which closed the books on its | worst month, from a price stand point, in nearly a year and a ’ half. ; Dealings were sluggish and, ' while selected oils and rails did 1 relatively well, numerous lead ers were at a standstill or in slightly lower territory at the finish. A pleasing earnings statement from Schenley lifted this stock 3 points and buoyed Park & Til ford, American Distilling and Dil tillers Corp. splitups, actual and proposed, aided Loew’s and U. S. Plywood. Oils such as Standard of Cal., Plymouth, Texas Co., and Standard of N. J. had the benefit of an,internal revenue bureau rul ing that petroleum concerns could continue to list certain intangi ble drilling costs for tax purposes despite a court decree to the con trary. jsoararooms were almost de serted as numerous customers ex tended the Good Friday holiday to Monday. Sentiment was bolster ed to some extent by the appar ently growing belief markets had pretty well discounted the end ing of the war in Europe. Transfers 320,000 shares com pared with 450,000 last Saturday were the smallest since October 28. The Associated Press 60-stock average of up .1 of a point at 59.9 and showed no variation on the week. For March the com posit was down 2.2 points, wlclest drop since November, 1943. Among the day’s gainers were Santa Fe, Continental Baking, American Telephone, North Amer ican, Chrysler, Montgomery Ward, Dupont, Dow Chemical and Philip Morris.. Minor losses were posted for Southern Pacific, International Telephone, General Motors, Hud son Motors, General Electric, Grumman Aircraft and Wool worth. It was a narrow market. Of 692 issues appearing, 327 were up against 36 down or unchanged. Bonds were mixed. At Chicago wheat was unchanged to up 1-2 of a cent a bushel. The cotton market was closed. Higher in the curb were Brown Forman Distillers, American Gas, Ryan Aeronautical and National Sugar Refining. Turnover here was 110,000 shares versus 130,000 :n the preening short session. ..V N. C. CHICAGO GRAIN CHICAGO, March 31.— (IP) — Wheat and rye gained major frac tions today and other grain futures markets were about steady in an extremely dull session that was largely devoted to evening up op erations in preparation for a week end which may bring important developments in Europe. The trade was nervous and price changes, though small, were rapid. Pit operators were on the bear side at the start, influenced by the good war news. The offerings were not large, however, and all markets rallied quickly after minor dips. Orders to sell wheat appeared on all minor upturns. Brokers who fre quently act for flour millers bought on all the soft spots. The corn market was quiet and prices were on the off side most of the day. Cash handlers reported 35,000 bushels bought for deferred delivery.
