JKINAWA NATIVES ARE HUNGRY LOT By JAMES LINDSLEY WITH THE U. S. MARINE [T1IRD AMPHIBIOUS CORPS ON 3KINAWA, April 2—(.1’)—Military eaderg planning the Okinawa in vasion were prepared to find plen y of trouble with the natives but vere agreeably surprised. The natives, they found, sre not erocious, just voracious. Nothing s wrong with their mental atti ,ude that a can of K rations won't :ure. The Marine provost marshal, Lt. Hoi. Floyd A. Stephenson of Wash ington, D. C. said more than 1, !00 of them had been rounded up >o far and there was not a mean ane in the lot. They have been jnder Japanese domination a long time and they are under-nourish ed and beaten down. Many are ill with various disease in which Okinawa abounds. Naturally no long range program nas been instituted after two days Df invasion but. refugee centers have been established and the Ma rines are doing the best they can for the unfortunate people. They are being fed emergency rations and sneak back into the line for second helpings of the chow. The natives, or “Okies” as they are called by the Marines, fled to the hills before the invasion started and today many started coming in voluntarily. They had been advised to leave the cities and air field area* by 3,500,000 pamphlets dropped by American planes before the invasion. -V Ambassador Hurley Says Chinese Communists Can Not Get Arms From U. S. WASHINGTON, April 2— UP) — Ambassador Patrick J; Hurley to day ruled out any possibility of American delivery of arms to the Chinese Communists, whom he de scribed as simply an armed poli tical party. The U. S. envoy to China was asked at a news conference whe ther he was aware of reports that the Communists had asked the United States to furnish weapons captured from the Japanese. It is with captured enemy equipment that the north China guerillas usu ally fight. Hurley said the view here is that the furnishings of armg to any armed political party would be tantamount to the recognition of another belligerent by the United States. This country recognizes and supports the national government af China. Hurley said the objective o< the United States in China is to unify the armed forces for the war against Japan, that some progress has been made along those lines and that more favorable results pet are expected. -V Mrs. Churchill Arrives In Moscow To Inspect Hospital, Orphanages MOSCOW, April 2 — t/P> —Mrs. Winston Churchill arrived by plane today for a visit to hospitals and :hildren’s homes as head of her iwn relief fund for Russia.
