Thomas Newton, 25, Chief Ra dioman, in the service for six years and overseas since the start of the war, has seen service in Africa, France and on Iwo Jima. Corporal Jack Newton and Sgt. James Newton, met in France re cently for the first time in three years. Jack, 23, with the engi neers has been in the service three years, while James, who is 27 has been in the anti-aircraft eorps since leaving the National Guard in 1941. Joe Ray Newton, Aviation Ma chinist Mate 2/c, 20. has been in the service three years and is now serving on an aircraft carrier in the pacific. A nephew, Master Sgt. Howard P. Hall, who was raised with the Newton brothers, has been In the Marine Corps for 14 of his 35 years, and is now stationed in California. PROMOTED Promotion from second to first lieutenant has been announced for Oscar K. Biggs, 24, of Wilming ton, N. C., an Eighth Air Force P-51 Custang pilot. Lt. Biggs is a member of the 339th Fighter Group commanded by Colonel John B. Henry, Jr., of San Antonio, Tex. In recent weeks, he has participated in many of the important Eighth Air Force missions to clear the way for ad vancing Allied armies. Before entering the military service, Lt. Biggs was employed as a stenographer by Atlantic Coast Line Railroad in Wilming ton. Lt. Biggs is the son of Mrs. Celia D. Biggs, 30 Spofford street. WOUNDED Struck by a machine gun bullet in the left knee during the fight ing near the Belgian-German bor der, Private Earl L. Carney, 20, of G-6, Nesbitt Court, Wilmington, North Carolina, is now recovering at a United States Army general hospital in England. He has been awarded the Purple Heart. “We were attacking the Germans in some woods that afternoon and a hidden machine gun opened up on us quite suddenly,” related Pvt. Carney, an infantryman. “I hit the ground, but I was struck in the knee. The medics came up under fire and got me out of there. I was taken to an evacu ation hospital and later flown to England.” “Pvt. Carney is making very satisfactory service under our care,” said First Lieutenant Earl M. Besi, Jr., of Knoxville, Tenn.. his ward sergeon. "After further treatment his recovering will be complete.” Before entering the Army in March, 1943, Pvt. Carney was em ployed by the Carolina Shipyards in Wilmington. His parents, Mr. and Mrs. Murray M. Carney, live at the Nesbitt Court address. returns from overseas Hubert H. Mc Koy, 19. S2/c, son of Mr. and Mrs. T. E. Mc Koy, 20 South 5th Street, has just returned from 19 months overseas service and is back on his ship, after spending a leave here. A 19 4 4 H. L. McKOY graduate of the New Hanover High school, he has been serving overseas nearly a year. Pvt. Albert Leonard McKoy, 21, overseas since this past January, is recuperating from a case of frozen feet. He was hospitalized for some time but has now return ed to duty after visiting his par ents and wife, Lois, who lives with her mother, Mrs. D. P. Nivens. T7 Service Officers To Aid On Contract Termination Class To Be Held May 1 The Wilmington Chamber of Commerce announced yesterday that Lt. A. L. Alspach, of the Navy; Lt. E. E. Jones, of the Army Engineers; and Warrant Of ficer Robert Kirkwood of the Phil adelphia Army Quartermaster Depot, will compose the team which will conduct the Contract Termination class May 1. The class will start at 1 p.m. at the Tide Water building, it was stated, and will last four hours. Invitatiohs have been sent to all contractors and sub-contractors in this area for whom there is a record. A number of firms already have made their reservations and fur ther information may be had from Walter J. Cartier, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce. -V Brake Check Program Is Started In City The method by which Wilming ton policemen started active parti ciptation yesterday in the nation wide Brake-Check program, an ef fect to reduce accidents and con serve the dwindling supply of cars was announced by Police Chief C. H. Casteen. “In making the check,’’ Chief Casteen explained, “the officer will place a wood block one inch thick on the floor board under the foot pedal. He then depresses the4 pedal. If it strikes the block be fore the brakes begin to grip, the brakes will be considered inade quate and (in need of immediate attention.’’ Brakes will likewise be consider ed unsafe if they grip while the pedal is slightly more than one inch from the floor board.
