C. (Hiring in Accordance with WMC Rules) GERMANS DESTROY 1,0 PRISONERS GARDELEGEN. Germany, April 16—(Deleyad)—(.P)—German SS (Elite Guard) troops burned to death 1,100 political prisoners here within the last few days while evacuating a concentration camp at nearby Mieste, 30 miles north west of Magdeburg, a survivor laid today. The informant, one of six per sons who escaped from the ghast ly death roundup, said Belgian, French, Polish and Dutch prison ers were marched into a great brick warehouse near here. Straw which had been strewn two feet thick on the floor then was ignited, turning the building into an infer no. Today a pile of charred bodies six feet high can be seen. Fearing the approach of the American Ninth Army—which had already bypassed them to hit the Elbe—the Germans removed the prisoners from Mieste Thursday. They were brought to Gardelegen, 25 miles north of Magdeburg, Fri day night. “We didn’t think anything out of the ordinary in being marched into a large building," one of the survivors said. "We had walked into buildings just like it many times before. “But then we smelled gasoline in the straw—and suddenly flames shot through the building. “We beat out the flames soon after the Hitler youth who had been left to guard us started the fire, but then the ones who had been left to guard the doors with machineguns fired tracer bullets into the building, setting it aflame again.” How anyone escaped was hard to say. All this particular survi vor, a Frenchman, knew was that he scratched and crawled over the bodies of the living, and dying and the dead until fresh air hit his lungs. Then he hid in a woods until morning. _\r_ Service Station Reports Theft of Six Auto Tires Six four-ply passenger . tires, values at $103.20, were stolen Mon day from the Esso Service sta tion, Third and Market streets, it was reported to police yester day.
