Earnings, dividends and contin ued hopes for constructive action by the new Washington, regime served to keep bullish fires smold ering. Selling cropped up in the final hour, however, on the idea that the recent sharp jump to new 8-hour peaks called for more of a technical correction. Expansion of Government contract cut-backs al so served to revive investment caution. Prices were best in the forenoon. From then ontrsdnegshrdlushrdl Dealings also tapered. Transfers of 1.130.000 shares compared with 1, 680.000 yesterday and were the smallest for a full session since April 12. The Associated Press 60-stock average was off .1 of a point at 63.8. Carriers were aided by several pleasing first quarter income statements, particularly one from Pere Marquette. The common and preferred of this road advanced 2 1-4 and 3 1-2 points, respectively. Secondary railway bonds im proved. At Chicago, barley drop ped 4 3-4 to the limit of 5 cents a bushel and wheat was up 3-8 to down 1 5-8. Cotton dipped 5 to 35 cents a bale. Better Curb performers were Fnaris Tire, Noma Electric, E. W. Bliss and National City Lines. The aggregate here was 270,000 shares versus 400,000 the previous day. —--V--— EXEMPTED PHILADELPHIA, April 20.—(U.R) —The Securities and Exchange commission today announced that the sale of $3,387,500 worth of Savannah Electric and Power Co. stock had been exempted from competitive bidding requirements. Donner Estates, Inc., of Philadel phia, will purchase the stock from Engineers’ Public Service Co. W. W. Newbrandt, Jr.’ has been serving overseas for- 12 months and was last reported on the island of Ley te. In the service for 22 months, he was r e c e ntly transferred from front line duty to Company Clerk. He is entitled to NEWBRANDT wear the Good Conduct ribbon, Liberation of the Philippines ribbon with one star and the Asiatic theater ribbon with two stars. He is the son of W. W. Newbrandt, 106 North 5th street, and husband of Mrs. Margaret Newbrandt, of Columbia, S. C. WOUNDED Pvt. Morris A. Avant, Wilming ton, is receiving treatment at Fin ney General Memorial hospital, Thomasville, Ga., for injuries re ceived in overseas duty. He en tered the service at Wilmington, and subsequently served at Fort Jackson, S. C„ and Camp Bland ing, Fla., before going overseas in March, 1943. He is the husband of the former Miss Ruby C. Tur ner, 312 Meares street. In Civilian life he was a taxi driver BURGAW SOLDIER PROMOTED WITH THE FIFTH ARMY, IT ALY—Private First Class Victor F. Johnson, son of Mr. and Mrs. Victor F. Johnson, Sr., who live on Route 2, Burgaw, N. C., has been promoted to corporal on the Fifth Army front in Italy. He is a jeep driver with the 631st Field Artillery battalion. BRONZE STAR Colonel Wayne S. Moore, com manding officer of a combat engi neer unit, has been awarded the Bronze Star for “meritorious achievement” in connection with military operations against the enemy at Aitape, New Guinea. The colonel’s wife, Mrs. Virginia F. Moore, resides at 219 Country Club boulevard, Wilmington, N. C. PROMOTED Lt. Col. Leoni das Baker was recently promot ed to his present rank at the I Troop Carrier Command base, Bergstrom Field, near Austin, Tex. He is the son of Mr. H. T. Baker, 613 Walnut street, Wilmington. Lt. Baker is the Air Inspector at BAKER Bergstrom Field. -V Senator Suggests Award Of Congressional Medal Of Honor To Ernie Pyle WASHINGTON, April 20. —{IP)— Posthumous award of the Congres sional Medal of Honor to Ernie Fyle, Scripps-Howard columnist killed on le Jima, was proposed in a resolution introduced in the Se nate today by Senator Willis (R Ind.)
