In The Service NORTH CAROLINA TEAM | Teamed togeth er on the same Flying Fortrese crew at the Alex a n d r i a (La.) Army Air Field are two North Carolina aerial gunners who will soon complete an intensive course in combat flying and go overseas HOBBS to blast the Axis. They are Cpl. John T. Ingram, gunner, of Roanoke Rapids, and Cpl. Robert J. Hobbs, armorer gunner, of Wilmington. Cpl. Ingram is the son of Mr. and Mrs. John J. Ingram, 77 Wash ington street, Roanoke Rapids. The 19-year-old gunner is a grad uate of Roanoke Rapids High school, class of June ’44, and en tered service in the same month. Cpl. Hobbs, 20, is the son of Mrs. C. W. Long, 1011 South Fifth street, Wilmington. He entered service in July, ’43. Alexandria Army Air Field Is part of the Third Air Force, which trains medium and heavy bomber crews in the United States. Listed among the instructors at the southern Flying Fortress cen ter are many officers and enlist ed men who have seen action in every theater of war. These vet erans direct crews through train ing conditions that simulate actual combat, stressing teamwork, for mation flying and high altitude missions. DUPLIN SERVICEMEN WARSAW. — Mary Carlton, daughter of Mrs. Bruce Carlton and the late Mr. Carlton of near Warsaw, has been promoted from ensign to lieutenant, junior grade, in the Navy Nurses Corps. She is stationed at Corona, Calif. Lt. Lawson G. Matthews, »©n of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Matthews of Magnolia, was recently promoted to captain while stationed in Eng land. He had been overseas nearly two years. Sgt. Charlie Straughn, brother of Grace Straughn of Beulaville, is a prisoner of war in Germany according to a report by the War Department. First Sgt. Floyd H. Williams of Wallace,' whp is serving with a quartermaster truck company in the Central Pacific was recently awarded a medal for driving a truck one year without an acci dent. Sgt. Williams has been in service since 1942. John W. Shaffer, 18, son of Mrs. J. W. Shaffer and the late Mr. Shaffer of Kenansville, was killed in action in France on March 4, the War Department has notified his mother. He was sent overseas in January of this year, after en tering the Army in August, 1944. Lem Hodges of the Merchant Marine has returned to his base af ter spending a furlough with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Mills Hodges, in Warsaw. Cpl.'James R. Woodward of Warsaw and Mount Olive, has re turned to1 the States after serving several years in Italy with the Army. Lt. Rivers Johnson, Jr., USA, recently spent a leave in Warsaw with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. R. D. Johnson. Lt. Pelton W. Ellis was recent ly presented with a Certificate of Valor at the On tario Army Air Field in Califor nia by Brig. Gen. Edward M. Mor ris at an impres sive parade cere m o n y . at the Fourth Air Force fighter base. ELLIS ■Lt.- Ellis attended North Carolina State University and was commis sioned a second lieutenant in the air forces at Williams Field, Ari zona, in August, 1943. He served with the 15th Air Force from De cember 1943 until September 1944 and wears the Distinguished Fly ing Cross, Air Medal with nine oak leaf clusters and unit citation., ■ His parents, Mr. and Mrs. L. P. Ellis, reside at 120 Castle street, Wilmington. -V One lone Afrny Ordnance M-18 ‘Hellcat” tank destroyer, with Gen.
