The drowning is said to have oc curred when Atkins jumped from a boat in which he and his brothei. John Russ Atkins, also of White ville, and two sisters were riding. When it became evident that he was in difficulty his brother jump ed out to rescue him but was com pelled to break away to keep from being drowned himself. A detail of military police were summoned from Wilmington yes terday to drag the lake. The drag ging was continuing this afternoon. C., has recently been awarded the silver Star medal for ‘‘dist:nguish i n g himself by gallantry and in WATEKS trepidity in action against the enemy” it was learned aere today. Waters was officer in :actical command of two vessels an patrol in the Southwest Pacific when Japanese vessels were sight ed on a course toward an enemy lideout known to be protected by shore guns. He led his ships be tween the enemy vessels and upon nearing the target commenced his attack, which sank one ship and badly damaged the other, although his ships were under attack by enemy planes and suffered several near misses. Lieut. Waters has also received the Presidential citation awarded to the officers and men of his boat, the ‘‘Carolina Chile” named for his wife, the former Betty Silvia Lewis. They also hold a Presiden tial citation from President Os mena of the Philippines. Lieut. Burnett, of Burgaw and Carolina Beach, left several days ago to report to Turner Field, at Albany, Ga., after spending a 15-day lca\ e with his parents at Carolina Beach. Lieut. Burnett, recently commis sioned a second lieutenant in the Army Air Forces, completed his final training before receiving ,iis commission at the Army Air Forces school at Turner Field. BROTHERS MEET Lieut, (j.g.) J. T. Meadows and his brother John “Jack” W. Mead ows Q.M.3/C, sons of Mrs. M. Mead ows, of Wilmington, were reunited recently somewhere in the South Pacific after five years. When Lieut. Meadows, commander of a PT boat, learned that an aircraft carrier, on which his brother was stationed, was nearby he came aboard to surprise him. STATIONED IN FLORIDA Pvt. Edgar E. Sellers, son of Mr. and Mrs. E. E. Sellers, of Supply, is now stationed at Camp Blend ing, Fla. Pvt. Sellers, a graduate of the May, 1944, class of Shallotte High school, entered the army in December, 1944. He has two broth ers now serving overseas. 44 ILLEGAL STILLS CAPTURED BY AGENTS OF AW DEPARTMENT Officials of the local Alcohol Tax Unit field office revealed yes terday that 44 illegal stills capable of producing a total of 4,200 gal lons, were seized in Sou'.hea. ,e:n North Carolina during the first six months of the year. The six months haul, less than that of a similar period last year, netted also 493 gallons of non-tax paid liquor and 23,750 gallons >58 mash in the seven counties cover ed by the investigators. Eighty-eight persons were ar rested and 27 automobiles wer? seized. Trials have been held for all arrested before Apnl 23 and convictions handed down. There are 20 cases still pending trio.. Mr. Gray reported that in the seven counties, the greatest num ber of illegally operated stills was discovered in Brunswick and Ten der with the Sea Breeze see.ion of New Hanover netting the great est number locally.
