FLORENCE RENNEKER PERDEW IfRBhHy nf Jnlan WJlliow * . 1 Deadly Dozen For Japan ■ A dozen steps toward Tokyo which have taken Allied might t othe very threshold of Japan are traced on the map above. Step No. 1, the invasion of Guadalcanal Aug. 7, 1942, was followed, one by one, by the others, which have drawn a noose around the Japanese home islands._ _ MARKET SUFFERS SHARP TUMBLE By VICTOR EUBANK NEW YORK, July 21.—(iP)—The stock market this week suffered one of its sharpest stumbles in nearly two years although selling subsequently dried up appreciably and scattered recoveries appeared. The decline got under way Mon day but liquidation was the light est in three months. Cut-backs, labor rifts and the belief further anti-seculations moves were under consideration by Washington serv ed as bearish arguments. Leaders were unloaded in vol ume Tuesday with losses, running to four or more points, being the largest since early November, 1943. Chief blame for the relapse was laid to boardroom talk of a possible quick surrender by Japan in the Wake of the big Allied smash. In the final hour offerings were so urgent the high speed ticker tape fell three minutes behind actual floor transactions. Turnover of 1, 560,000 shares was the best since June 29. The retreat, resumed Wednes day, was more orderly. There was a fairly encouraging revival Thurs day with dealines tapering to a three-mon'.hs’ low. 'Spiking of peace rumors by government offi cials and the idea the list had been oversold were blolstering factors. The coming length week-end—Secu rities exchanges are recessing Sat urdays through July and August — and the desiper to await news from the Orient and Potsdam tempered purchasing spirits Friday and trends were mixed throughout. The aggregate in the final session drop ped to 6650,000 shares, a bo'.ton for a 5-hour stretch since April 9. -V NEW YORK COTTON NEW YORK, July 21—(JP)—Cot ton futures moved indecisively in quiet trading today partly reflect ing pre-war-end dullness. Closing prices were 30 cents a bale lower to 5 cents higher. The market rallied as much a' 25 cents a bale in early dealings on light mill buying. Towards the close near months sagged on a flurry of hedge selling. Spot cot ton markets were quiet. Traders developments. Scheibcrling, national commander of the American Legion, declared today “there are serious forces at work” seeking to undermine the position of World War II veterans. These forces, Scheiberling said in a statement are trying to minimiza the veteran’s opportunity, “nullify his job preference, freeze his economic position and perfetuaU the handicap under which he finds himself by reason of his war ser vice.” He said the trend had appeared in legislation on hospitalization, in administrative action on veterans’ preference for government jobs, and surplus property board and OP A rules. Contending that some govern ment bureaus are misinterpret! Hi and ignoring laws designed to “re store the veteran to the economic position he would have held had he not been called to the servics of his country,” Scheiberling said, however: “The Legion does not chargi responsibility for this situation ti the doors of the President. Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. technicians announced today they had perfected a method of inflat ing the huge tires on bombers and commercial planes with the gas, thus reducing plane weight and au toma ically increasing range and "pay loads.” W. E. Shively, head of Good year’s tire design, and Parry Kel rer, manager 4* airplane tire de sign, said 92 pounds of air is te quired to inflate a 110-inch tire— but 13 pounds of helium will do the same job. Thus, they said, they save 79 pounds on each tire, a total of 158 pounds for the two main wheels. -V FOREIGN EXCHANGE NEW YORK, July 21-(jPf- Foreign exchange rates follow (Great Brit ain in dollars, others in cents): Canadian dollar in New York open market 9 1-8 per cent discount or 90.87 1-2 U.S. cents, unchanged Latin America: A ,.: EUROPE: Great Britain 4.03, unchanged.
