Smith announced today his resignation as president of the Chicago Stock Exchange, a post he has held for seven years, ef fective April 30. He did not an nounce his reason for resigning Smith, who said he had made no plans for the immediate future, added that if he should be absent for any great length of time up to April 30, he would name James E. Day, vice president, chief ex ecutive officer of the Exchange. The retiring president has been a member of the Exchange for 17 years.
