Yet from its recent activities in the'world of ether, it is still sporting the long beard of experience it g-°w during the years when the network was known as the “Blue.” Take a gander at this smart move on the part of the ABC-ers and it will be cause for rejoicing among record enthusiasts. The network pro gram department a couple of weeks ago came up with what it thinks is a possible solution to the problem of music on co-op shows when it booked Cliff (Ukelele Ike) Edwards into its 8:30-45 a. m., parley across the board. Problem of putting music into co-ops re sults from an American Federation of Musician’s ruling forbidding its members from working on a pro gram which has more than one sponsor. ABC solution is vocals by Edwards, music from the uke, which AFM does not consider a musical instrument, and choral background by a quartet. Quar tet will sing, hum and do a Mills Brothers by imitating instruments. Idea steams from recording made by Sinatra and others during the Petrillo disk ban, in which singer was backed by chorus. ’Round The Town Carl Seymour back in town re ports plenty, of ice and snow on his trip . . . Religious training Termed Constitutional CHAMPAIGN, 111., Jan. 26—CU.PJ —A three-judge court ruled today that religious teaching on a volun tary basis in public schools was constitutional and that an avowed woman atheist who had sought to halt such training suffered no infringement on her rights. The.court rejected the petition of Mrs. Vashti McCollum, pretty wife of a University of Illinois hor ticulture professor, that the Cham paign public schools be ordered to halt the half-hour Bible lessons conducted by the city council on religious education during school hours. The court held there was no in fringement of the statutory rights of Mrs. McCollum or her son, James Terry, 10, whom she had refused to let attend the classes. She had charged he suffered em barrassment because of his moth er’s refusal to let him join the classes.
