J. W. Jenkins plans to leave Wilmington Saturday for Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where he will be separated from military services. Capt. Jenkins, professor of mili tary science and tactics at the high school, received his orders yesterday, and following his dis charge he will return to his home in Dallas, Texas. The officer said he had nor been notified who will succeed him here but expects an assignment will be made within vile next two weeks. Until a new military head arrives here, he continued, a ser geant probably will be detailed to the High school. Although his orders became ef fective yesterday, Capt. Jenkins will remain here to present awards at a ROTC drill Friday. Capt. Jenkins praised Wilming tonians for the coopeiation ac corded him and said he had en joyed his assignment here. C DREDGING SPEEDED AS HUTSON CLEARS KEG ISLAND SHOAL U. S. Engineers here announced that the government dredge, Hus ton, is now at work on the removal of the Upper Midnight shoal, the largest in the river, and will work down the river with the Talcott to Southport. The Huston has just completed clearing the Keg Island shoal and other small shoals from the Cape Fear river channel, of ficials said yesterday. The big, 250,000 cubic yard-per month capacity dredge is expected to be occupied on the Upper Mid night work all through February. After the two dredges finish chan nel clearing about Mar. 15, Engi neers estimated, the Huston is scheduled to begin work on the anchorage basin in the North-East Cape Fear river. The Talcott, with a 200,000 cubic yard per month capacity, is at work in the lower end of Clark Island reach at present and will work south during February, they added. New York City has 733 public schools, with 850,000 children on register. NEGRO HOME BODY RECEIVES REPORT The New Hanover county council of the Negro Home Demonstration group which recently met in St. Mark’s church, heard a report given by Katie L. McGuire on a December meeting of the South ern District federation. Leader activities for 1948 were discussed and special duties as signed. Nine neighborhood leaders were appointed to attend the Fam ily Life institute held at Williston school. Ten clubs contributed $16.75 to • fund being set up by Home Dem onstration club members for boys and girls in charitable institutions. Wrightsboro club members were awarded the county council ban ner for having the largest number of members present.
