De Vyver, vice president and personnel di rector. j CRAVEN MAY NEW BERN, Feb. 7.-Craven county will probably double its quota of $2,184 in the March of Dimes campaign for infantile para ysis, reports County Campaign Chairman W. F. Dowdy, Jr. He gives special credit to Miss Ann Elliott, health educator of the coun ty health department; Lt. A. M. Spalding, USMCR, public informa tion officer at Cherry Point; the home economics class of New Bern high school; and the local theatres. SS SANTA CECILIA HITS WATER TODAY Sponsored by Mrs. Frederick By ers, Jr., of Old Westbury, N. Y., the S.S. Santa Cecilia, second of six ships being built , for the Grace Line by the North Carolina Ship building company, will be launch ed this afternoon at 3:30 o’clock. Mrs. Byers is the daughter of W. R. Grace, first vice president of the Ingersoll-Rand company, and a grand-daughter of W. R. Grace, founder of the steamship line. Her sister, Mrs. Alan Corey, Jr., christened the S. S. Santa Barbara, a sister ship of the S. S. Santa Cecilia, here Jan. 24. The vessel to be launched to morrow is the fifth to bear the name of Santa Cecilia. The first served in World War I and the fourth was built in mid 1942 and immediately assigned to troop and material transportation in World War II. The second and third of the Cecilia’s were between war ships in the New York-West coast of South America service developed by Grace Line. The S. S. Santa Cecilia is a 52 passenger vessel, with all state rooms air-conditioned, all outside rooms, and with a swimming pool a pleasant lounge and saloon, and ample deck space for recreation, including an enclosed varanda. She will enter service several months after launching, joining her sisters to offer weekly sailings from New York to as far south as Chile by way of the Panama Canal. The two hundred and thiry-ninth vessel from the North Carolina Shipbuilding company, the S. S. Santa Cecilia is the eleventh of 15 operated or owned by Grace Line from among that number. Two Liberty ships, two standard Maritime commission C-2-S-AJI design, five C-2’s especially built for Grace to carry refrigerated cargo, and five sisters of Santa Cecilia make up the total. Maybank Against Ceiling On Cotton WASHINGTON, Feb. 7—— Senator Maybank (D-S. C.) re ported after a White House visit today that President Truman had expressed hope that it will be un necessary to impose ceiling prices on raw cotton. “The President did not give me the assurance that ceilings will not be placed on cotton,” May bank told a reporter, "but in the course of the discussion of the cot ton situation throughout the world he said he hoped it would be un necessary.” “As a former cotton man, I urged him to do everything pos sible to increase the production of cotton and to help the farmers.” Only 40 per cent of the coun try’s 1,928,000 miles of county and local roads have all-weather sur facing. COAST LINE ADDS TWO NEW MEMBERS TO OFFICE HERE Atlantic Coast Line railroad offi cials yesterday announced the ad dition of two new members to the staff of the general offices here. Harry McGregor, former secre tary to the superintendent of mo tive power, western division, has been appointed secretary to J. D. Loftis, general superintendent ol motive power, McGregor entered railroad ser vice with the Atlanta, Birmingham and Coast railroad in February, 1940. During the war he served 49 months in the Navy, 25 of which were overseas. He will make his home in Wilmington. T. D. Smith, Atlanta, has taken up new duties with the claims of fice of the ACL. He was formerly employed with the ABC in Atlanta as a claim in vestigator. A portable rig for landing and launching light airplanes from a suspended steel cable has been de veloped.
