V X. TUCKER TO LEAD TEACHER GROUP At a meeting of the Brunswick county unit of the North Carolina Education association held re lent ly in Leland, Glenn M. Tucker, principal of Leland High school, was elected president to succeed Mrs. Gay McKeithan, and Mrs. Eva Mae Knox, second grade teacher, was elected vice-president. A discussion by the group of pedagogs on the proposed Merit System was held. No definite ac tion wa staken by the association until the teachers went into the matter thoroughly. The teachers approved the recommendations ol the Governor’s Commission, the main point being a study of the whole field of salary schedules where the Merit System is now being practiced, and that every precaution be taken to make the system, if adopted in the state, the best that could be offered to the teachers. The new Brunswick president, who is a member of the State Leg islative committee of the NCEA, emphasized that teachers should neither adopt nor disapprove the proposed system while it is in a definite period of study, but that all teachers should seek to know the true worth of any proposal made which would affect the lives of children, and that after a care ful and thorough study, they should then take a definite stand for or against the system. The tentative statement of work ing policies and principles of the Governor’s Commission on Study of Merit Rating of teachers, which the NCEA committee has accepted as a study procedure, has been mimeographed and distrib uted to all Brunswick teachers for further consideration. Accidents are more costly in hu man lives than war. Total combat deaths in World War II were about 265,000 and about 660,000 were wounded; while during the same period accidents on the home front killed 355,000 persons and injured 36,000,000, of whom 1,250,000 suf fered some permanent disability. ——— Buying Public Is Now "Economy” Conscious irjjp average American household Btret-chc? p< ketbooks for added sav i-psby I uving big sizes in most every *hmg an d it works the same way when ‘ „ buy the 100 tablet size of St. Joseph Win for 3;>c as you get nearly 3 tab* Ms for 1i’.
