TRUMAN REMAII % MUM OVER CAB) ET WASHINGTON, Feb. 19.—OJ.F!)— President Truman kept the capital guessing today about his choice of a new secretary of interior tut speculation was rapidly narrowing down to three candidates. Informed sources gave top bill ing to Supreme Court Justice Wil liam O. Douglas and Sen. Joseph C. O’Mahoney, D., Wyo., as most likely successors to Harold L. Ickes. Oscar L. Chapman, acting interior secretary, was regarded a close third. Do Decision inese sources said Mr. Truman had made no final decision up to late yesterday and conceded he might come up with an outsider. Douglas’ stock took a jump yes terday when he visited the White House and also conferred briefly with Ickes. Mr. Truman reported ly wants a western Liberal for the job and Douglas, who is from Walla Walla, Wash., would fill the bill. Feels Secure O’Mahoney, it was said, feels secure of his future in the senate and might be unwilling to give it up for a comparatively uncertain term in the cabinet. Even if he should be reelected to the senate upon completion of the job as sec retary, he would lose his seniority of more than 12 years service. Douglas was reported the favor ite candidate of Postmaster Gen eral Robert E. Hannegan, who as Democratic National committee chairman has great influence with the president. Wants Liberal Hannegan, these sources said, wants a man of Dougles’ liberal stamp to succeed Ickes in the belief it would help keep New Deal elements oi the Democratic party more solidly in line as the 1948 presidential campaign approaches. GOWNS RUINED CHARLESTON, S. C„ Feb. 19.
