In a surprising display of affection for members of the German Navy, some 5,000 German-Americans paid homage to the 547-man crew of the cruiser and showered them with gifts. The ship will be used as a “guinea pig” in the atomic bomb test at Bikini Atoll. (International) Cla re Booth Luce Wilts Under DemandForNylons WASHINGTON, Feb. 27—UP) —Down to yoar last pair of rayons? Well, better not tell it to Clare Boothe Luce, She’s heard that line before—about 5,000 times. It all strated this way: The Connecticut Congresswoman put out a statement suggesting there might be more- stockings if hosiery mills could get more rayon. That was where Mrs. Luce put her foot in it. Unhappy merchants, seizing on this ray of Republican help, began to put ads in their local papers. Write Letters "Write Mrs. Luce,” they im plored. “Tell her you must have rayon stockings.” The ladies wrote. Boxes and cartons and mailbags of letters. From women of every stocking size and shade, Democratic and Republican, old and young, Yankee and southern. In a few days, Mrs. Luce’s harried office workers esti mated they had slit over 5,000 letters, almost all with one des perate refrain: "I’m down to my last pair.” Some Optimistic Some writers optimistically gave their sizes, asked that Mrs. Luce rush their rayons by return mail. Others wanted even bigger miracles. “I am informed,” said one writer, “that it is in your power to put rayon stockings back on the market again.” Another brought politics into her appeal. “We aren’t all New Dealers,” she wrote her fellow Republican, “nor are we all bobby-soxers. Help. Help." Needs Them Too One put it on a cozy, woman to-woman basis. “I’ll bet you need stockings too,” she wrote, “being in the public eye as you are.” There was the reproachful type: “Had to go without stock ings Sunday and now I have a cold.” The desperate: “Please do your darndest1'” The poig nant: “I can get away with bobby sox, but I do like to dress up once in a while.” Mrs. Luce sent the first 5,000 down to the Civilian Production Administration. But they still are coming in. Reporter Helps A feminine reporter looked over the latest pile and clucked sympathetically at the Luce of fice force. But she poked her head back Inside the door with an after-thought: “By the way,” she said hope fully, “I’m down to my last < pair, too. You don’t happen to know. . . ”—and ducked fast. I Attlee Warns His People Of Consumer Goods Delay LONDON, Feb. 27—OJ.R)—Prime Minister Clement Attlee warned the British people Wednesday that pro iuction of consumer goods in this rountry would be only “somewhere ralf-way back to pre-war stan iards” this year. CLASSIFIED DISPLAY ~~ ACE NAZI MUNITIONS MAKER UNDER ARREST BY AMERICAN FORCES FRANKFURT, Germany, Feb. 27.—(IP)—U S. authorities an j nounced Wednesday the arrest of a ! secret German armaments maker 'they termed “the greatest single ! power behind the Nazi war ma i chine,” with an industrial empire ! expanded by seized foreign plants. They identified him as Friedrich Flick, 62, head of a $400,000,000 combine, and declared he possess ed “the greatest economic power of any single industrialist in Nazi Germany.” Flick, starting in 1933, built up greater controls than those held by the Krupp niunitions family in three w'ars from 1870, but worked so anonymously that he was vir tually unknown both aboard and in Germany, an American investi gator said Christopher Columbus pourneyed to Ireland to check a report that St. Brendan had once sailed across the ocean. CLASSIFIED DISPLAY 1 11 -i 200 4-F MEN WILL TAKE “PHYSICALS” Selective Service Orders Reclassification Of All Who Pass Tests About 200 registrants In the 4-F classification will be called by the local Selective Draft board to re port to a local doctor for physical examination and if passed will be reclassed in 1-A and will be sub ject for induction in the April call ing, according to officials. The board recently received a letter from the State Director of Selective Service giving the lower ed physical requiremtns for this group and to aid the local board I and the examining physicians in! determining which registrants are I now acceptable for military ser-j vice, who heretofore, may have j been in limited service or 4-F classification. During the pre-induction which began January 1944, the local medi cal board agreed to do jnass exami nations which were carried out at that time. No arrangements have been made at present for the local physicians to repeat the mass examination* for the April call, according to local officials, how ever, this matter will be taken up soon with the medical board. The most recent changes con cerning the lowering of physical standards will include deformities of the feet, body and spine; healed disease or injuries of body; and stuttering and stammering of a degree disqualifying for general military service but which has not prevented the men from success fully following a useful vocation in civil life. MANY STEEL MEN STILL ON STRIKE CIO Reports Some 350,000 Employes Of Small Firms Remain Idle PITTSBURGH, Feb. 27 — (U.R) — Some 350,000 CIO United Steelwork ers are still on strike, a report re leased by the union showed Wednesday night. The report revealed that 213 companies, employing almost 396, 000 members, have signed con tracts granting an 18 1-2 cent wage increase. Less than 600 fabricators and non-integrated companies, employ ing about 350,000 men, are still strikebound. The union today listed 19 com panies, employing nearly 13,000 workers, who are among the latest to sign contracts They included American Can company, Chicago, Joliet, and Maywood, 111.; L°s Angeles, Sacramenta, San Fran cisco, Oakland, San Jose, and Pa cific Grove, Cal., 5,107; and Lukens Steel company, Coatesville, Pa., 3 393.
