VINSON TOUCHES OFF OPPOSITION TO BRITISH LOAN WASHINGTON, March 5.—(U.R) — Secretary of Treasury Fred M. Vinson Tuesday touched off sharp Senate opposition to the proposed $3,750,000,000-(B) British loan. Vinson contended that failure to provide the credit would drive Bri. tain and the United States into economic warfare. His testimony opening hearing on the loan by the Home Banking Committee brought heated objec tion from Sens. Robert A. Taft, R., O., Abe Murdock, D„ Utah and other committee members. Taft repeatedly objected to Vin son’s assertions that failure t0 ap prove the loan would be ‘catostro. phic” and choke-off this nation’s foreign trade. Taft argued that British restric tive trade practices could not limit U. S. world exports, that such ex ports depended entirely on the amount of goods this country is willing to import from abroad. Murdock objected t0 Vinson’s ar. gument that Britain would be driven to a restrictive trade war if the loan is not granted. ‘If Britain Is so powerful that sue can uo mis i aon t want to enhance that power,” he said. Vinson argued that the loan rep. resented alternatives of economic warfare or “a genuine chance for peace.” Reported objections to this statement prevented the secre | tary from completing his prepared testimony and he was asked to re appear before the committee to morrow for further questioning. fourWen will face CHARGES OF ROBBERY IN RECORDER’S COURT Four men will be tried on charges of robbery with violence in Recorder’s court this morning.
