GLENN ENGLE DETROIT, March 10.—(£>—Hard ship cases stemming from the 109 day-old General Motors strike are mounting daily, but from the stand point of relief and breadlines the situation is much less acute than that occasioned by labor strife in the late 1930’s. Although admitting the first 100 days were the easiest, Welfare de partment officials here in the big corporation’s backyard proudly point out that less than seven per cent of the 30,000 Detroit GM work ers thug far have sought public fi nancial aid. 171—Wanted to Buy, Rent WANTED AT ONCE—TOURIST CAMP, filling station and grill. CLASSIFIED DISPLAY i— ■ : They believe, and leader* of the striking CIO United Auto Workers concur, that three principal factors make the longest and costliest dis pute in automobile industry history less . a taxpayers’ problem than shorter strikes back in 1937-39: 1. The strikers themselves, after four years of war production with a Considerable amount of overtime pay, had laid aside war bonds and other reserves before the strike was called Nov. 21. 2. Numerous private sources, in addition to the International Union, have contributed to strike welfare funds. These include the National Citizens committee for the relief of GM Strikers, with several affili ated groups. 3. Strike welfare funds of the various GM local unions were well built up under the union’s wartime no - strike pledge. UAW leaders claim that pledge was adhered fa more closely in the 80-odd GM plants than in factories of the other “Big Three” producers—Ford and Chrysler. Five cents out of every dues dollar is turned over to such funds. The International Union’s contri butions to date total $578,993—an average of little more than $3 per striker. The money is paid out to locals on a per capita basis, but then is distributed on the basis of individual need, a union spokesman explained.
