ACQUATIC ACTION Wave Wrestles Water While Wooing Oblivion WASHINGTON, July 25.—(U.R)— Authorities agreed Thursday night that Bernice Ann Boner, 39-year old Wave officer who jumped 90 feet from the Frances Scott Key bridge to the Potomac river in darkness, was a good swimmer but a poor navigator. At 3 a.m., Thursday the Wave lieutenant commander leaned from a moving taxicab on the bridge, broke atvay from the taxi driver’s grasp, climbed a five foot para pet, and jumped. Going Strong When policemen in a rowboat, aided by lights flashed from the shore, reached her in midstream half an hour later, they found her swimming around in circles. "I'm surprised that I can swim as well as this,” she gasped to her rescuers. “'The moment I hit the water I instinctively started to swim.” But she steadfastly refused to climb aboard the rescue boat. “Be cause I might swamp it.” Clinging to the stern, Comdr. Boner was towed ashore. Even though dripping wet and shivering on the shore, the officer was described by her rescuers as ‘‘tall, slender and beautiful.” The only explanation she would offer authorities was that she was “dissatisfied” with her work. Gay Divorcee She has been a member of the Waves for three and one-halt years. ---—^ LAY - AWAY NOW FOR Back - To - School Days Only 38 More Days There Are Still Many Articles On The Hard-To-Get List. f GET YOURS NOW BY MAKING A SMALL DEPOSIT ON YOUR SELECTION ALARM CLOCKS - All Metal With Radium Dial PEX SETS— WATCHES • EVERSHARP A Fine Selection For Men and Women • SHAEFFER . FRONT STREET * WILMINGTON'S LARGEST CREDIT JEWELERS A native of Indianapolis, Ind., she was divorced after 10 years oi marriage shortly before she joined the Navy, police said. Shortly before the jump, Comdr. Boner hailed the taxicab of Francis J. Collins and directed him^to drive her to Key bridge, about three miles away. She was to meet some friends there, she said, who would be in an automobile bearing New York license plates. Hit Front Seat The car never appeared, and Collins took his fare across the bridge to the Virginia side. On the return trip, he heard the rear door being opened and slammed on the brakes so hard that Comdr. Boner was thrown against the front seat. She jumped out, with Collins after her. He grabbed her arm, but the Wave broke away, leaped to the parapet and was gone. Collins drove quickly to the nearest police station and reported. The policemen in the rowboat ex pected to find nothing when they reached mid-stream. But there was Comdr. Boner, swimming like mad but getting nowhere in her circular cruise. WAGE HIKES I Carolinas Textile Mills Announce Pay Increases CHARLOTTE, JuI725 — (JP) - A general upward movement in wages for textile workers in the Carolinas was indicated Thursday as numerous mills announced pay boosts for their thousands of em ployees. Most of the announcements said the increase would average eight cents an hour and establish a 73 cents minimum as compared with the present widespread mimimum of 65 cents. Some of the mills, however, gave no figures but merely said they would put ad vances into effect beginning Mon day. Ratification Needed In mills under contract with unions, it was pointed out, the proposed new scales must be ac cepted by the unions before be coming effective. Meantime, spoKesmen tor DOtn CIO and AFL textile unions de clared they were going qjiead with plans to demand from mills with which they have contracts increas ed minimums and other conses sions. New Wage Goal* The textile Workers Union ol America (CIO) recently announc ed a campaign to obtain a 12 cents-per hour increase and a mimimum of 77 cents an hour. The United Textile Workers of America (AFL) set its goal at 15 cents an hour increase. Earlier in the week Roy Law ence, southern director for the TWUA, had called the mills’ plan to offer an eight cents an hour in crease an effort to forestall his union’s drive for the 12 cents ad ditional pay. Eight-Cent Raise The huge Cannon mills, with 20,000 employees at its plants in Concord, Kannapolis, and else where Thursday announced its adoption of a 73 cents mimimum, representing an average increase of eight cent an hour. President Charles A. Cannon, in making the announcement at Con cord, said the upward revision was being made in keeping with his company’s established policy of paying its workers in keeping with the condition of the textile industry. Not Unionized Cannon Mills are not unionized but the big enterprise is now an ozjective of the CIO’s million member southern organization campaign, with a squad of or ganizers actively at work in an attempt to sign up the employees. A similar increase was announc ed for the 3,000 workers of Tex tiles, Inc., at Gastonia. Palmetto Increases In 'South Carolina, higher pay scales were announced by numer ous mills of the Piedmont region. A survey made in Greenville showed an eight cents increase was proposed for the Victor-Mona ghan mills' and Dunean Mills at Greenville, Watts Mills at Lau rens, and at the Rock Hill and Whitmire plants of Aragon-Bald win. Unannounced Amounts Increases of unannounced amounts were disclosed for the Laurens Mill at Laurens and at the following Greenville plants: Poe, American Spinning, Brandon Duck, Renfrew Bleacheries, Poin sett, Judson, Camperdown, and Union Bleachery. No estimate was made of the number of workers to be affect ed but the figure will run into the thousands. Spartanburg reported that in creases had been authorized for other thousands in the following mills: Spartan, Startex, Beau mont, Raycord, Drayton. Pacific. Arkwright, Saxon, Mills Mill, and Fairforest Finishing Company. Delay Seen Mill spokesmen said the amounts would depend upon adjustments in the various classifications of the industry, and that it might be several days before the average increase would be known. The increases announced Thurs day came shortly after three big textile enterprises with headquar ters in Greensboro had made known they would offer a 73 cents mimimum and an average in crease of eight cents an hour to their employees, totaling 27,000. The Cone Mills, the Burlington Mills with 50 cents in North Caro lina and Virginia, and the Carter Fabrics company were the three. An unofficial report received here said the Hanna'h Pickett Mills at Rockingham had announced an eight cents advance. Officials of some other large mills said they were not ready yet to disclose their plans. Get CS Rating Now WASHINGTON. The House had voted to put at least one, and possibly two, mili tary men on the five-man commis sion which would rule over atomic energy in the domestic field. The Senate had voted for an all-civil ian body. Some Dissatisfied Some of the House conferees ex pressed dissatisfaction with the decision, and indicated they would fight when the conference report comes up for ratification in the House. It is subject to Senate ap proval also. The House won a point on an other provision dealing with mili tary representation. The conferees agreed that the director of the di vision of military application of amomic energy be a member of the armed forces. Senate Defeated The Senate had voted to put a civilian at the head of this divi sion, one of four that would work under commission direction. The conferees were still in dis agreement over patent provisions of the bill. The House completely rewrote these provisions as pass ed by the Senate. At Loggerheads One of the main differences is I a House requirement that atomi# patents taken by the commission from individuals must be return ed eventually to the original owners. The Senate voted to give tho government, through the commis sion, a virtual, perpetual monopoly on patents and Inventions in the atomic field.
