TOMORROW: MISSES’ BLOUSE I BETWEEN THE RIVERS Four Plait Whip Plays Tune At Hog Killings By Mrs. Lorena C. Rawls Star Correspondent CURRIE. March 11 —As I begin my column this morning my thoughts turn to hog killing times. Perhaps because we have recently had one my way. The head butcher for our hog killing was Marshall Gardner, a friend to all the white folks, es pecially the Corbetts. He is the best known colored man in our community and lives close to the old Thompson’s Cross Roads all alone but plenty of close by neigh bors. He has many trades—car - penter, mule driver, chief cook at fish fries, tobacco barn chicken stews, entertaining little folks while the older heads get a break —and many more useful trades. But the most welcome one is to see faithful Old Marshall — or as the young set call him—M.G.—roll up on a bitterly cold morning with all his butchering tools, including an enormous four plait mule whip A whip on hog killing day? I hear my readers exclaim—Yes, and it is needed in various ways. Did you ever know of a hog killing— ye country folks—without every dog in the community being pre sent for the occasion? And every old chicken—even the setting hens —being present. Well, Marshall would surely make the four plait sing a lively tune. Not many things of interest to relate concerning our hog kill ing that day but different hog kill ings of by gone days when life was young. The most memorable one being the time when a heavy cold wave swept over the South after we had begun one the largest killing of fneat we ever had on our place. It was the custom for all hands to do all they could the first day and come back the next to finish up. We knew if the crew left that day at knocking off time there would be no returning the next for HEARING CALLED ON BOAT BASIN Engineers Set April 16 As Date For Harkers Is land Session A public hearing on the proposed Harkers Point boat basin will be held in the Harkers Island School auditorium Wednesday, April 16, at 11 a. m., it was announced yes terday by officials of the Wilming ton District Corps of Engineers. Roy X. Wood, of Raleigh, officer in charge of the main North Carolina recruiting station, will be in Wilmington March 28 to administer the oath of office to marine reserves. An invitation for all former marines to enlist in the marine reserves was extended yesterday by Sgt. J. G. Smith, the local recruiter, whose office is at room No. eight, post office building. Sergeant Smith explained that recruits will be placed in class 3-B of the reserves. They will be called for duty only in the event of an emergency, he said. No drills will be held. How ever, reserves may volunteer for a two-weeks training period. Any former marines who may be interested in joining the re serve organization are requested j to communicate with Sergeant I Smith between now and March 28. HEARING DATE SET WASHINGTON, March 18 - f/P) —- The Interstate Commerce com mission today set April 22 for the opening of hearings on competitive rates and practices of railroads and domestic ship lines. When Your Innards" are Crying the Blues WHEN CONSTIPATION makes you feel punk as the dickens, brings on stomach upset, sour taste, gassy discomfort, take Dr. Caldwell’s famous medicine to quickly pull the trigger on lazy “in nards”, and help you feel bright and chipper again. DR. CALDWELL'S is the wonderful sen na laxative contained in good old Syrup Pepsin to make it so easy to take. MANY DOCTORS use pepsin prepara tions in prescriptions to make the medi cine more palatable and agreeable to take. So be sure your laxative is con tained in Syrup Pepsin. INSIST ON DR. CALDWELL’S—the fa vorite of millions for SO years, and feel that wholesome relief from constipa tion. Even finicky children love it. CAUTION: Use only as directed. DR. CALDWELL’S SENNA LAXATIVE CONTAINtO IN SYRUP PEPSIN by noon one of the worst snow . storms reached our way ever ever to be recorded. My husband and I had a confidential talk in the kitchen which held our faithfu’ workers until late into the night. But not until every thing was fin- ■ ished and for weeks we could sit | around a good fire and enjoy J frozen meats not to be kept on cold storage. Well, during the time cf drying up the lard, which had to be done in the large smokehouse with bedt of oak coals, the real spice of thh story took place. Billie Carr, r j well known personage at the larc cooking business, was assigned hi: regular position. He was good a, the job but had one very outstand ing shortcoming—he was sleepy j all the time even falling to slee) while walking and at work. Well, to make a long story short—Billy Boy happened to just what 1 ex pected he would—nodding and fell head foremoust into that pot of hot boiling lard. But when M. G. be gan to play the very liveliest tune he ever played with his four plait the victim came to—Well I will ring off the subject and let my readers hear the final results later. Our community gladly wel comes Rev. and Mrs. W. Hugh Cox, of Wilmington to our midst. After spending their honeymoon in Wilmington, they returned to their country home to live. They are having many callers from far and near, among them are Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Corbett, of Charlotte; Mr. and Mrs Fitzue Formy Duval and Dr. and Mrs. Graham Bare foot, all of Wilmington.
