NEGRO FOUND DEAD
CHESTER, April 16—(A*)—Willie
Reid, 30, Negro taxi driver of
Lancaster, was found dead at Fort
Lawn last night, Coroner Lewis H.
Miller of Chester county said, and
two Negro contruction workers are
being held in jail here for investi
gation.
Reid’s taxi and money had been
taken, Sheriff William H. Peden
said.
Ernest Willis and Leonard Brigle,
alias Rudolph Lowell, were picked
up near Charlotte and brought
here, the sheriff said.

NAVY VETERAN Charles Borgess, 22, kisses his wife, Nyra, 21,
and son, Charles Anthony, 17 months, before leaving fcr the Los
Angeles Municipal Court for arraignment on a charge of escaping
from a road gang. Borgess and his wife were arrested recently when
they were found living in a stolen auto. Mrs. Borgess was freed of
the car theft charges. Cash contributions to the mother already total
52,700. A veterans’ group has hired an attorney to try to have Bor
gess' one-year car theft sentence reduced by the court.

FUNERAL FOR MRS. MARSHALL
CLEMSON, April 16. — (JP) —
Funeral services for Mrs. John
Logan Marshall, vice president
general of the Daughters of the
American Revolution, will be held
at 11 a. m. tomorrow.
Mrs. Marshall, wife of a Clem
son college engineering professor,
died unexpectedly in Philadelphia,
Pa., Monday.
The body was accompanied here
by Mrs. Julius Y. Talmadge, D.A.
R. president general. Mrs. Mar
shall was a candidate to succeed
Mrs. Talmadge and the flag over
the D.A.R. headquarters in Wash
ington will be flown at half staff
until after the funeral.
WORKERS STRIKE
ROCKINGHAM, April 16—(.4s)—
Union workers of the big Safie mill
went on strike at 5 p. m., today,
and the textile plant which em
ployes 1,100 workers on 77.000
spindles and 2,200 looms was clos
ed down.
The issue apparently was not
over wages. Officials of the United
Textile workers (CIO) said that
the mill management recently
discharged seveal union men. The
management was told to reinstate
the w'orkers by 5 p. m. or there
would be a strike.
The men w'ere not reinstated,
and at the time set switches were
pulled and the mill machinery
stopped.
STRAW BERRY PRODUCTION
MAY BE DOWN
RALEIGH, April 16. —(£*)— Al
though the acreage is expected to
be 10 per cent greater. North Caro
lina’s production of strawberries
this year probably will be less
than last year.
Federal-State crop reporting
service reported today that an in
crease of 10 per cent was expected
in strawberry acreage, but that
the yield is estimated at 156.000
crates compared with 176.000 last
year and the 10-year average ol
440,000.
No estimate was made on price
prospects for this season. Last
year's prices ran as high as 80
cents per quart.

NEW YORK. April 16 —(U.R)— I
Wholesale food prices for the
week ended April 15 declined for
the third consecutive week, Dun
& Broadstreet Inc., reported to
day.
The agency’s index for 31 basic
foods in general use, for the lat
est week, dropped to $6.24 from
$6.41 in the preceding week and
$4.20 in the corresponding 1946
period.
Price declines were noted in
wheat, rye, hams, bellies, lard,
butter, cheese, coffee, cotton
seed oil, cocoa, potatoes, steers,
hogs, lambs and beef, while flour,
oats, barley and eggs advanced.
