The ticker tape dozed throughout. A mild midday buying flurry was shortlived. While gains of frac tions to a point or so remained at the close, declines of as much predominated. Transfers of 520,000 shares compared with 820,000 Thursday. They equalled those of last Monday which were the small est for a 5-hour stretch since July 5, a year ago. The market rallied sharply at the close on a blurry of mill buying and short covering which met a scarcity of offerings. Interest centered in the July 1047 delivery where there was consider able short covering and switching into later months, anticipating first notice day June 24. Reports again circulated that the Army will soon issue a call for cotton offers to meet Japanese tex tile needs. Some circles believed purchases would cover only low grades not used by domestic mills and would likely be the minimum necessary for June and July ship ments. It was also learned that an ad ditional $20,000,000 bank credit has been arranged to finance cotton shipments to China. Futures closed 55 cents to $1-55 a bale higher than the previous close.
