Morning Star Correspon
dent Kiziah Gives History
Of Old Light
(Editor’s note: In the following
article written by Star Correspon
dent Bill Kiziah the exact history
of an old tower near Fort Cas
well is told. In last Wednesday’s
edition of The Star a story by
darl Cahill Staff writer appeared
in which was discussed the pos
sibility of the structure being a
Eire control tower).
SOUTHPORT June 12—The old
lighthouse piciured in the Morn-1
ing Star Wednesday was built
about 1840 by the Lighthouse
Service and its official designa
tion was the “Western Channel
Light’’. It was constructed of
juniper wood which, but for minor
defects, is in ar good a state of
preservation as it was on the day
that it was used in constructing
the picturesque building.
At the time fee western channel
light came into use there was two
channels leading to the sea at
the mouth of the Cape Fear.
One of these cnannels passed
close to Bald Head island, follow
ing the same course as the pres
ent day shipping channel.
The ether channel passed right
near Fort Caswell on the west
side of the river and this avenue
was officially known as the west
ern channel.
From it the lighthouse got - its
name. In fact, the western chan
nel light was intended to guide
the mariners in and out through
the western channel while Bald
Head light guided them through
the eastern channel.
Although the government owns
adjoining property on both sides,
the Oak Island Coast Guard re
servation on the northwest and
the Fort Caswell reservation on
the east, the lighthouse and the
and on w'hich it is located is no-w
he property of the Caswell Beach
torporation. Recently Robert W.
I’owell of Goldsboro, one of the
>wners of the lighthouse and land,
stated that they planned making
some repairs and painting the
ighthouse in the near future.
Several years ago officials of
he Lighthouse Service at Charles
on, writing the Star-News corres
sondent about the western channel
ight, stated that it was in use for
everal years ana was aiscontlnu
id when the shoaling of the west
-rn channel and increasing popu
arity of fee eastern channel made,
ise no longer necessary.

New Jersey Interests To
Plant Tomatoes
On Site
__ ....Special to the Star...
SOUTHPORT, June 12. —Leases
vere signed here this week by
•Jew Jersey interests for two
racts of land on ike river road.
1 hundred and 50 acres was in
■olved and all is intended for to
nato plant growing, but as some
f the land has to be cleared not
ill can be planted next spring.
A good portion of the land is
ilready cleared, will be plowed
his fall and tomato sed drilled
n next spring. Clearing of the re
nainder of the land will start in
September with plans to plant in
he spring of 1949
Although the very unseasonable
pring cut his plant production to
learly half what he expected, E.
i. Sheppard of Shiloh, N. J., was
mcouraged this spring and more
han ever convinced that tomato
ilants could be grown here for the
arms in eastern states. His 1947
■future with 25 acres sewn to the
:ed has already brought assur
ince that three times that much
and will be planted in the sed
lext spring. Perhaps a great deal
nore.
Publicity on the Sheppard ven
ure is being placed with a num
>er of publications devoted to the
:anning industry and this fall is
xpected to bring quite a number
if Delaware, New Jersey and
Maryland men here on investi
tating trips.
HUGE ESTATE SOLD
rO PAPER COMPANY
Gravely Plantation Is Sold
For $55,521 To Inter
national Concern
Special To The Star
SOUTHPORT, June lS-^A deed
recorded here Tuesday saw the
pas^/je of the famous old Grave
ly Plantation to the International
Paper Company, from the Bel
lamy family, which had held title
since 1842. This platation was the
original home of the Bellamy’s in
Brunswick county, a part of he
estate of the late John D. Bel
lamy, it was listed on the tax
books at a value of about $20,
000.00. The purchase price, as
given on the deed was $55,521.00.
Lying just west of Jackie’s
Creek and fronting on State high
way No. 17 for a considerable dis
tance, the tract embraces 2,600
acres, practically all of this beig
in woods.
Very little farming has been
done on Gravely for many years
but before the revoluntionary war
and before it came into the hands
of the Bellamy’s it was regarded
as one of the foremost producing
plantations in Brunswick county.
Lord Cornwallis is credited with
having destroyed its original af
fluence. Later during the civil
war and while owned by the Bel
lamy’s it received another hard
blow.
The sale was in order to settle
the John D. Bellamy estate, the
tract was mentioned extensively
in the will of the venerable form
er Brunswick man who died in his
94th year, he was one of Wilming
ton’* most renowned lawyers.

Purchased At Southport
Special to The Star
SOUTHPORT, June 12—The War
Surplus Administration has an
nounced the sale of two surplus
mine sweeper craft to local in
terests. Both boats are now at
Charleston and will be brought
here and converted into menhad
en fishing boats.
In the bidding the YMS 426 went
to the Brunswick Navigation
company of Charlotte, operating
a factory at Southport. The YMS
276 went to Mrs. Bess Miller1
Plaxce. wife of the general
manager of the factory.
It is understood that boih boats
are new and saw service oniy
during the recent war. They are
admirably adapted to being can

boats. Two of the boats now used
by the company were sub chasers
during the first world war. The
YMS’s, as the letters indicate,
are Mine Sweepers.
The U. S. Navy has declared
