COMMISSIONERS TURN
I COLD SHOULDER ON
COUNCIL’S REQUEST
New Hanover county commis
sioners yesterday speedtily and
quickly turned down a request
from the city council to reconsider
the joint action of the two groups
last Wednesday on rejecting the
taking of any action toward en
dorsement of airlines operating in
to Wilmington.
Since the first action, the coun
cil at a special meeting of its
own endorsed a petition of the
State Airlines, Inc., asking the
Civil Aeronautics Board for a re
hearing on its decision granting
permission to Piedmont Aviation
to make this city a terminal.
The commissioners yesterday
agreed to send a letter of thanks
to the city fathers for its petition
asking the commissioners to recon-r
sider.
Commissioner . Harry Gardner*
spoke briefly declaring that any
further action by the county would
be “inconsistent” and a motion
was passed to drop the matter.

The continuance was granted to
allow the recovery of one of the

juries at his Greensboro home.
The pair charged are Eddie John
son, the injured man, and Mar
vin Kern of Raleigh. Kern is at
liberty on bond.
The pair, according to the war

from the airport and smashed up
in returning to the field.
MOUNTAIN SLIDE PARTLY
REMOVED
HOT SPRINGS. June 30-W
A mountainslide that completely
blocked. U. S. highways 25 and 70
five miles east of here today had
been partially removed this after
noon and Asheville-Knoxville traf
fic began flowing after a six hour
tieup. Highway officials blamed
the landslide, 50 feet long and
15 feet deep on the roadway, to a
heavy rain which deluged the Hot
Springs area Saturday. Nine
brilges on Madison county roads
were washed out.
