was a case of muddling through
io~ today's stock market with as
sorted special issues doing fairly
well while many leaders stumbled
and dealings, despite big blocks
of low-quoted issues, sticking to
■around the recent lows.
- At the start scant inclinations to
extend Tuesday’s comback were
exhibited. The ticker tape fre
quently idled. Advances of frac
tions to a point or so were well
distributed for favorites at the
close although numerous losses of

prospects, remained as a selling

Gold mine* enjoyed an early
fast flurry on foreign rumors, un
confirmed, that the United States
might boost the buying price of
the yellow metal. This group soon
quieted as doubts were expressed
in financial quarters that any such
step would be taken. Moving pic
tures also took a rest.

cents to £1.50 a bale in moderate
ly active dealings today. Consider
able trade covering in nearby Oc
tober futures against the pur
chase of 30,900 bales of cotton by
the CCC for Japan and Korea in
fluenced the balance of the mar
ket.
Traders believed that rains so
far in Texas, while beneficial,
have not been sufficient 10 break
the drought there completely and
assure a bumper crop.
Fairly good rains were report
ed in some parts of the eastern
belt which were unwanted and
considered favorable to increased
weevil activity.
Hedge selling against the new
crop movement was light, except

bond market went to sleep on its
feet today in one of the slowest
trading sessions in the last seven
years.
Sales of $2,290,000 were the
smallest since $2,190,000 changed
hands on June 7, which i.» turn
was a low since August, 1940.
Tuesday’s business amounted to
only $2,760,000.
With New York singed by the
heat wave that has scorched the
mid-west and other areas attend
ance at brokerage offices was at
low ebb and many, investors were
plainly in no mood to do busi
ness.
Underwriting circles showed in
terest in news that New York’s
triborough bridge and tunnel au
thority was one of the biggest is
sues ever sold on the fire, the
authority, it was indicated, will
market between $110,000,000 and
$115,000,000 of ' ne\y tax - exempt
revenue bonds within the next
two months. Largest revenue is
sue ever sold by the authority was
$110,000,000 in March 1945.
In the listed market a few rails
attracted mild support but gen
erally small gains and losses were
a stand-off.

mostly the former today which
cattle and sheep were steady to
25 cents higher and above.
Most good and choice butcher
hogs sold between $20.00 and
$28.00. although the practical top
was $28.25 and two loads merited
$28.50. Sows had $17.00 to $21.25.
Shippers took 500 of the 7,500 hogs
on sale and packers brought in
1,500 more on direct consignment.
Choice steers hit $34.2o, the
highest of the season and only 75
cents below the year’s peak of
$35.00 on Jan. 8. Yearlings went
up to $34.00 and heifers to $30.00.
Most choice steers and yearlings
netted $30.00 to $33.50, while good
and choice heifers ranged from
$25.00 to $29.00. Good beef cows
brought $17.00 to $20.00, sausage
bulls went up to $17.75, and veal
ers took $24.00, though these most
ly were $23.00 downward.

The Agriculture Department re
ported today that it bought 61,
450 bales of coton for export to
Japan under a purchase offer an
nounced July 18. The purchase in
cluded 5.00C bales of spotted cot
ton. The remainder was practical
ly all white cotton of which more
than 37,000 bales were low mid
dling- or lower in grade.
