TOBACCO FESTIVAL
Annual Event To Be Held
August 28 At White
ville Armory
WHITEVILLE, Aug. 17. — The
annual Columbus County Tobacco
Festival, sponsored jointly by the
Woman’s and Junior Woman’s
Clubs of White ville, will be held in,
White ville on August 28 in the
Armory. Mrs. David Smith has
been appointed the over-all chair
man for this year’s festival.
The highlighted feature of the
festival will be the crowning of the
1947 Tobacco Queen, for Columbus
County, as “Miss Columbus.”
Every civic club has been contact
ed in the county to send a repre
sentative to the festival t0 via
for the honor. Judges are being
chosen from outside the county.
Miss Anne McKenzie, the 1946
beauty queen, will reign over the
festival until the actual crowning
of this year’s queen. Miss Mc
Kenzie will take part in the
crowning ceremony to be held
sometime during the dance. An
orchestra being contacted at the
present time for an engagement
is highly rated in the dancing
circles of North Carolina, Mrs.
Smith said.
Contestants must be 17 years of
age and must not have passed her
20th birthday prior to August 28.
Contestants must also be single,
having never been married, and
sponsored by one club only.
Mrs. J. A. Maultsby, chairman of
the invitation committee, expects
to have a complete list of contest
ants in by the end of this week.
Mrs. H. B. Gurganous has made
plans to have a buffet supper for
all contestants along with many
other social entertainments.
Gum is soft and dusty and on
