America’s Card Authority
Written for NEA Service
A good bridge player is alert and
observant. He never plays a card
carelessly. There is a reason for
every play.
When you open your partner’s
suit, he has a right to figure that
it is a standard type of opening—
either your fourth best of his suit,
or low from an honor, or the top
of two or three small cards of his
unit.
An observing defender defeated
the contract on today’s hand. De
clarer played the queen from dum
my on the opening club lead and
East won. East did not carelessly
return a club. He could count that
declarer had no more clubs, and
from the bidding, his trump suit
should be pretty solid.
East decided to lead up to the
dummy’s weakness, and so led the
nine of hearts, on which East
played Jahe deuce.
West at first had been a little
upset because his partner had not
returned a club, but he noticed
that East played the nine, and
then the deuce of hearts, clearly
indicating that he held no more
hearts.
Therefore, the only chance to de
feat the contract wae for West to
lead another heart and hope that
East could over-ruff the dummy.
East could, and did, for the trick
neded to set the contract.

YOUTHS BOUND OVER
TO SUPERIOR COURT
A Greensboro and two Raleigh
youths yesterday were bound over
to New Hanover County Superior
Court under $1,000 bond each on
charges of the larceny of an air
plane at the Carolina Beach air
port early last spring.
The action came yesterday in
Wilmington’s recorders court when
Ralph Alexander, and Maurice
Kern, of Raleigh, and Eddie John
son of Greensboro, appeared be
fore Judge Winfield Smith.
The warrants charge that the
youths took a plane belonging to
William S. O'Neal of Raleigh and
wrecked it. Johnson was hospitaliz
ed after the accident. The value of
the plane was set at $2,295 in the
warrant.

NON-SUIT TAKEN
IN LARCENY CASE
Otto Stanley, 23, Negro, yester
day in a jury trial in Superior Court
admitted a pair of shoes found
near 721 Castle street, which had
been broken into, were his.
But he explained that he had
lost the shoes a few days before
police reported that the place had
been entered and 100 pennies stol
en. That was last July 19, police
said.
But Defense Attorney Elbert
Brown argued that there was no
evidence that Stanley had been
near the site although the shoes
found belonged to his client.
■Die court ruled the trial a non
suit and the jury didn’t get a
chance to consider the matter.
Stanley was charged with larceny
and receiving.
