KING ACL OFFICIALS MEET HERE TODAY Will Formulate Plans For Annual Railroad YMCA Membership Railroad Y.M.C.A. leaders and Atlantic Coast Line officials will gather in Wilmington <odav to formulate plans for the annual membership campaign, it was an nounced yesterday by F. .L. iCing. vice-president of the Atlantic Coast Line and campaign system chairman. The two-day organizational con ference will be climaxed by a luncheon meeting at Sf. Paul's Lutheran parish nouse Thursday at 1 p.m. The Atlantic Coast Line op erates Y. M. C. A. facilities at Rocky Mount, Florence, S.C., and Wavcross, Ga., with an approxi mate total membership of 6,740. The two-day session will bring together P. M. Montgomery, rail road secretary of the Y.M.C.A. national council. Richmond, Vs; J. A. Harper, general secretary, Rocky Mount: L. H. Johnson, gen eral secretary. Florence, S. C., and R. J. Medcalf, general secre tary, Waycross, Ga. Among those expected to attend ! are: R. G. Murchison superin tendent, Rocky Mount; R. B. Hare, superintendent, Florence; James Grant, superintendent mo tive power, Waycross, who are presidents of their respective Y.M.C.A’s, and railroad and city chairmen from the three points. YOUNG GIRL DROWNS IN GREENSBORO LAKE GREENSBORO, Aug. 26. —(JP) — Sustained efforts at resuscita tion by members of the Greensboro fire department doctors, lifeguards and ambulance attendants failed to save the life of 15-year-old Bar bara Farris of Charlotte, after she went down in 14 feet of water yes terday afternoon at Starmount lake. After two hours of work on the beach at the scene with ambulance and fire department resuscitators plus the administration of drugs, the girl was taken to central fire station and placed in an iron lung for another hour and a half. Trask ' Mayor Vets Administration Personnel Attending National Convention Veterans administration person nel in the Custom House building will dwindle to two workers today, it was reported yesterday by R. S. Matthews, Jr., contact representa tive iu charge of the local office. Matthews said that the decrease was only temporary, but that the office will employ five workers when the remainder of employees return to work later in the weak. Miss Mary Elfe, clerk stenog rapher, and Herbert W. Clegg, training officer, resigned recently and will not be replaced, he said. Hal H. Goode, contact represent ative, Francis F. Thompson, senior training officer, and James H. Roberts, training facilities officer, will leave today to attend the an nual national convention with the Wilmington American Legion Drum and Bugle Corps. They will return to their office in the Custom House Tuesday. Two employees, Matthews, and Mrs. Ruth K. Wood, clerk typist, will remain and have charge of the duties in the VA office. DR. ELLIOT TAKES EXCEPTION TO NEW DAIRY ORDINANCE Dr. A. H. Elliot, city-county health director, yesterday took exception to the new state dairy standard ordinance. Predicting that the law, which becomes effective September 1, will be changed. Dr. Elliot de clared that it "puts too much stress on the technical points of the dairy barn and not enough on the actual purity of the milk.” He added that low grade milk can make from grade "A” barns as well as from poor barns. LAKE WACCAMAW BOAT RACES SET Drivers From Five States Enter Event Slated For Sunday Afternoon Special To The Star WHITEVILLE, August 26 Speed demons from five states will be present when the opening jflag goes down on the annual out board motor boat races at Lake Waccamaw on Sunday, August 31. Some of the finest and hignly rat ed speedsters in the South will be competing for $600 in cash money that is being offered by the (spon sors of the event, the Lake Wac camaw Lions Club. The races are scheduled to be gin at 10 o’clock in the morning and continue until 4 o’clock in the afternoon with 7 different classes competing for the awards. The en try blanks have been pouring into the entry committee, headed by Fred Goldston, with an expectant goal of fifty racers set to go at the starting line. The classee will include: run abouts, hydroplanes, and a “free for-all” climax. The run-abouts and hydroplanes will be classed in A,B, and C, catagories to even the races, both in competition and skill. All races will be started by clock and flags. sucn nationally Known racers as, Louis Patterson, Bob Rowland, Mabry Edwards, and Claude Smith will compete in the hydro plane classes with top speed bet ter than 60 miles per hour. The boats that the racers drive ere of light weight and the spills and thrills are fast and often. Carl Pennington of Wilmington will be in charge of the pits and Gil Pickard, al60 of Wilmington, and Fred Goldston will do the starting and judging. All of the drivers are expected to enter the races at White Lake, which will be held on Monday.
