C INCREASED SHIP TRADE SEEN HERE Maritime Report On Fi nancial Aid Cited A favorable report by the Unit- i ed States Maritime commission in ( the matter of financial aid and . redefinition of Trade Route 11 was seen here yesterday as a possible development whereby Wilmington ; will enjoy increased trade with foreign ports. The report, dated Sept. 4, was given by examiners G. O. Basham and C. N. McDaniel. The applicant in this proceed ing, South Atlantic Steam ship Line, proposes to serve Trade Route 11, between United States South Atlantic range and ports in United Kingdom, Ireland, Conti nental Europe, Scandinavia and the Baltic. Under this application the route has been redefined to include Hampton Roads ports. The examiners in their proposed report recommend: “The Commission should find that foreign flag competition exists on Route 11 and that opera tion of subsidized vessels thereon is required to meet foreign flag competition and to promote for eign commerce; that Souln Atlan tic Steamship Line possesses the ability, experience, financial re sources, and other qualifications necessary to enable it to conduct opeartions on Route 11 as to meet competitive conditions and pro mote foreign commerce; that granting of financial aid is neces sary to place the proposed opera tions of the vessels on a parity with those of foreign competitors, and to provide adequate service, and is reasonably calculated to carry out the purposes and policy of the Act; and that the applica tion of said corporation to the ex tent it seeks a subsidy on presen , Route 11 should be granted, sub ject to such conditions as the Commission may deem neces sary.” The hearing in this proceeding was held November 12-14, 1946 be fore the United States Maritime Commission in which J. T. Hiers, Executive General Agent, of the Wilmington Port Commission was an intervener for the Wilmington Port Commission _and testified in support of the South Atlantic’s ap plication for financial aid and re definition of Trade Route 11. Should the proposed report of the examiners be approved by the Commission it will result in the establishment of at least two calls per month inbound and outbound between Wilmington and the ports SEE KAMER AND SEE BETTER Eyes Examined, Glasses Fitted DR.
