Bromley Ox man of New York today urged the Methodist church to take a more active part in formulating this country’s foreign policies by “providing competent men to re present the moral opinion of the world at the places where dici sions are made.” “Unfortunately we have large ly waited until decisions are made and then protested them,” Bishop Oxman told delegates to the annual session of the board of missions and church exten sion. “Protests don’t build con structive programs. There should be a flow of opinion to the White House from all groups—Protes tants, Jewish and Catholic alike.” He cited partition of the Holy Land as an example of the in articulateness of his church. “The very complexities of the partition left us silent. We were not prepared to recommend any action.” A step toward preparing the church for a more informed voice in world policy decision was tak en this year, he said, with the ap pointment of the Rev. Garland Evans Hopkins as associate sec retary for the relation of busi ness and government to missions. Hopkins made a comprehen sive report to the board based upon his visits to the Arabic world, India, Southwest Asia and the occupied areas of the Far East, including Okinawa, Japan and Korea. “As far as the rest of the world is concerned,” Hopkins report ed “whatever the foreign policy of America or any of the other of the west nations may be, it is a Christian foreign policy. It is therefore, essential that Christians more actively influ ence the policies of the nations in which we are dominant, or clear ly disassociate ourselves from the policies of these nations.” sealIalTgoal NEAR 20 PERCENT Only 14 Days Before Cam paign Comes To Close; Contributions Lagging WHITEVILLE, Dec. 11—Ap proximately 700 which repre sents 20 per cent of Columbus county’s goal of §3,500 was re ported today by the office of the Christmas Seal Sale Committee. With only 14 more days until the campaign comes to a close, members of the committee said the present rate of contributions, if it continues, would place the total at less than half of what will be necessary to inaugurate a campaign against tuberculosis with any chance of success. However, the bangle cam paign now in progress in the white schools and the vigorous drive inaugurated this week among the colored population of the county are expected to swell the sales. Willard G. Cole, chairman of the seal sale committee reter ated his appeal for a generous response to the letters which have gone out. ‘Buy the seals which were enclosed in the letter and each of you will share in the expanded program which will mean so much in the battle with this dreaded killer of man kind,” he said. Local committeemen in each of the school districts are now conducting the bangle sales. J. W. Campbell, principal of the Whiteville Negro schools, is heading the Seal Sales among the colored people. He started off the drive with a radio ad-' dress over WENC Monday and has already received encourag ing reports with respect to reaching the goal of $300 which was set as the quota for the Negro people of the county. The success or failure of the countywide effort to carry on the tuberculosis battle will be determined within the next few days, Seal Sale committee men said. 1872 1947 Wilmington Lodge No. 319.
