FOUR NEGROES TAKE
POLICE EXAMS IN S. C.
COLUMBIA, £•. C, (ANP) —Four young men, first of their
race io seek such positions in half a cer.tury, fools city civil sow
-IC(' examinations here Monday j< ; places on, the city's police
force.
Mayor Frank C. Owens’ office declined to identify the city
council several weeks ago, Mrs. I, W. K'ibler oi the mayor’s,
office ';aid an official statement &■ to identity of the men would
hp made alter civil service examiners check ihe papers, expect
cd to ibe df.eve in about 10 days.
There were no applicants for ihe city’s fire department,
though Hie contrary had boon variously reported. However, it is
believed that one or more applicants tt* ihe police examine
tions had been disqualified/because they did not meat weight,
age and heigh) requirements.
City council had voted unanimously to:* the officer.'; on pc
fib on from citizens, who- pointed out m substance shat employ-
Tnew of such officers would increase respect for and cooperation
wiih lew enforcement by Negroes, and elso place this city in ihe
• sms category Li liberalism and progressiveness of a half hun
dred or more other cities and towns in ten. states now using Ne
gro officers.
The officers had been sought, here since 1941 but council
had frowned on the idea. .
It appeared certain that if the men pass' the examinaf’iLns
they would be assigned io the department, undergoing customary
training before taking up patrol duty. However, if this should
happen, Columbia cannot lay claim to initiating this service
in South Carolina. Three Other towns now use colored officers.
They are Summer ton, with 2. now in iky sixth year. Clover, with
one having three years of service, and Conway, which last year,
added two Negroes to their departments. ‘
