chemistry at the fall convocation
of Ohio State University last
Thursday, December 20.
Dr. Saylcs, a native of San
Antonio Texas, has been a
member of the Bennett facul
ty since 1947. He did his un- i
dergraduate work al Arkansas j
State College arid received his
M. S. from Michigan State
University.
His research was concerned j
with polyamine polyacetate metal I

he war All-Conference guard for
three years and All-American for
two years in football.
lie is also a former member
of the N. M. Giants professional
football team. During his Army
career, he was First Lieutenant
and was coach of football arid
swimming teams. He also serv
ed as recreation and athletic
director.

Va., for predoctoral biological studies at Harvard University .
Rebecca G. Fortune, Washington, D. C. ( for medical social work
study at Howard University; and Eugene Edwards, New York
City, for physical therapy study at New York University. Schol
arships have been awarded to date to train more than 6,000
highly specialized experts.

Civic Agencies
CHICAGO tANP)—The Chicago
Commission of Human Relations
cited three local civic agencies for
providing examples of good hu
man relations at a luncheon at
the Congress Hotel here last week.
The three were Spiegel, Inc.,
prosperous mail order company,
with a merit system calhni. for
integrated personnel on all levels;
the Francis W. Parker school
with an interracial student body,
and the First Unitarian church.
Spiegel received recognition for
its integrated employment policy.
The. company employs thousands
of Negroes.
The Parker school was cit
ed for developing “respect in
children for the different cul
tural contributions enriching
America*’ through its inter
faith, interracial student body
arid faculty.
The Unitarian church was cred -
ited with preparing the Hidy
Park-Kenwood Community for
integrated living and worship. Its
pastor, Dr. Leslie T, Pennington,
received special commendation.
The awards were given at the
11th annual luncheon of the com
mission

by Francis W. McPcck, executive
director, who spoke on “Human
Relations, a Metropolitan Respon
sibility.”
