CLINTON MAN CHARGED IN DROWNINGS
CLINTON A 41-year-old Clinton resident was charged with
manslaughter Monday after changing his story in a boating tragedy
that rook the life of his .six-year -old twin cousins and nearly cost
the hfe. of their sister Britt Oates is free under a $1 000 bond, pend
ing a coroner’s inquest this week in the Sampson County courthou!:.
Oates had told Clinton police that the twins, Richard and Robert
Holmes, sons of Mrs. Mary Alice Holmes, had drowned in the Erne
Cherry Pond Sunday as he tried to save them after rescuing their
sister.
Oates told Sampson Coroner Coleman Carter Monday, how-eve *
that he had taken the three children for a boat ride in a pond art
th«- bo vs drowned when the boat capsized Investigation showed Cs'u
had previously asked Cherry to allow lnm to use the boat, but had
been refused.
