Breeding Eggs j To Boost Tan Farmer’s Purse ] NASHVILLE Athean Deans: | j plans to increase his net annual j income by $1,700 to $2,000 through ! the addition of a poultry enter- \ prise on his 45-acre farm m the j Stricklands Cross Roads Commu- j nity He purchased 1.200 day-old j chicks about the middle of April | and will start collecting a harvest j of eggs in early October. The eggs j will be sold for hatching purposes j to a Wilson teed company which, ! in turn, will hatch and sell the ; chicks to broiler producers. Deans is the first Negro far- ; mer in the county to go into breeder egg production on a commercial basis. He has a i contract with the Wilson Co. which guarantees him a mini mum return of 55 cents per ! dor. for all the eggs he pro duces. The price may vary up ward. depending on market conditions, but not downward. Deans’ poultry flock, which Includes 1,000 hens and I'tO roosters, will produce from 14 to 37 thousand rforen eggs an nually. Even at the minimum rate of 55 cents per dozen, this will mean a gross annual in come of $7,700 to $9,350. Feed and other expenses will a mount to $5,000 to $7,000 which will leave net profits of $4,700 or more. The enterprising farmer got into the breeder egg business on the ad vice of W. F. Wright and Paul P. Thompson. Negro Farm Agents, j When he purchased his chicks in j April, he had no place to house j them so he used two tobacco barns j for temporary quartern Since that ! lime he has built a modern poul- j try house with the aid of a loan from a local lending agency. The i house is 20 feet v ide and 134 feet i long, has an aluminum roof which ! reflects the heat, and screen wire j sides which can be covered during ! the winter months. The earth floor { is covered with wood shavings for ! sanitation purposes. Water troughs j run down each side of the build- i ing. and feed containers are hung i front the ceiling down the center ; of the house. One of the major advantages of i Deans’ poultry enterprise is that j it involved only a small outlay in j cash Under terms of his contract j with the feed company, he will no* j begm paying for feed until his j hens start laying. As he sells eggs. ! While away the FAMIT staff | members pursued post graduate j work at six universities. I It Pays To ADVERTISE - !
