LESSON IV OCTOBER 26
Tire subject, oi tills week's les-j
son is "Victory In Temptation" j
based upon Matthew 4:1-11.
Memory Verse: "For in that he!
himself hath suffered being |
tempted he is able to succor them 1
that are tempted."— Hebrew 2:18. j
LESSON SETTING
Time The spring of A. D. 27.'
Place A willerncss, proba hly!
Place A wilderness, probably j
though ifs location is not definite-1
ly known.
LESSON PLAN
I The at-terding circumstances,
Mat trow 4:1. 2.
II The three temptations them-:
selves Matthew 4.3-10.
111 The e._n ars immediately
following the third temptation
Matthew 4:11.
LESSON DISCUSSION
Temptation may be either
sensuous, imaginative, or ra
tional. for example, a man may
he tempted through the senses,
then it appeals to greed, ap
petite. iust, or any of the pas
sions that beset mankind and
create our grosser miseries or
crime, ... If through the ima
gination, then il dazzles to be
tray. becomes as pride, ambi
tion. or any one of the grace
ful gracious forms that can be
made to veil vainglorious,
throug protean, egotism.
If through reason, then it comes
as doubts of the true, suspicion of
the good, or m any of the many
forms in which intellect protests
against the limit it so wishes, and
yet is so little able to transcend.
Temptation may thus assume
shapes akin to the highest as to
the lowest in man, but the form?
most distinct often subtle meet and
blend.
"Then Jesus was led up of the
Spirit. ’ This expression tells us
that God has a purpose in allow
ing temptation which will come.
The Devil’s design is to wreck
one’s life and io wreck the pur
pose of God in ad through men.
We should bear in mind that
our Lotd's temptation occurred
immediately after the hour when
He was officially anointed by the
Holy Spirit to undertake His great
Messianic ministry. Before this
time, there were no miracles; but
following the temptations. Jesus
begins to perform His miracles.
The first temptation came in the
form of an appeal to turn stones
into bread. Jesus is tempted to sat
isfy his hunger in such away as to
prove that He is the Son of God.
Our bodily appetites often form the
occasion of many of our severest
temptations. These appetites are

In the second temptation the
devil asked Jr:,us to win the
approval of she public by cast-
I ing Himself down from the pin
| naole of the tower. He pictured
for Christ the great acclaim
He would get from the applause
of the crowds who would ob
serve the miracle.
Th;rdly, the devil templed
Jesus by carrying Him up into
a high mountain from whence
Hr might view the kingdoms of
this world. And he added that
all these would be Christ s if
He would fall down and wor
ship, him the devil
I>K. G. F. MAD KINS
Jesus saw the trickery of the
! devil. By bowing down, He would
submit to the one before whom he
threw; Himself prostrate. For Jes
. us to nave bow ed down to the de
vil would babe meant a recognition
of the devil's power. To the devil’s
disappointment, Jesus overcame all
three temptations.
A LESSON TRUTH
God has not so arranged the
lives of His children that they
, should not have any temptations
and solicitations to evils, bur, He
has made abundant provision for
victory over temptations, primari
ly in three ways; by the sword of
the Spirit, His Word; by the ex
ample of Christ; and by the in
dwelling and power of the Holy
Spirit. We must, remember the
words of the Apostle Paul as found
in Romans, “in ail these things we
are more than conqueror through
that loved us."

Ghost." Subject. “The Greater Bap- •
tism." Baptism is one of the two •
sacraments observed by the protes
tant church, and is an outward
sign of inward purity. The sermon
was well-taken by an appreciative
audience.
