Charles Mc- Dew, chairman of the Student Non violent Coordinating Committee, hailed today's Justice Department suit against voting violations in Sunflower County. Miss., and asked that suits be initiated “in every other Southern county and state where violence and intimidation occur every day to prevent Negroes from registering to vote.” McDew's statement followed thp announcement of the Justice De partment suit against Cecil C Campbell, county clerk and voting registrar, and the State of Missis sippi in U. James O Eastland’s home - only 114 voting-age Negroes are regist ered out of a voting-age popula tion of 13,524. but more than half the 8,786 voting-age whites were registered. The Uni versity of Alabama canceled an ex tension course offered here after a Negro woman applied for admis sion. Officials at the university’s Huntsville Center said they acted because they were unable to get speakers needed for the course, a six-week seminar on current af fairs. A white friend applied later so that university officials would not be able to say that Mrs. Cashin was refused admission because she ap plied too late.
