CHICAGO (ANP) Death last week claimed one of civil rights' unsung heroes. He was William Henry Huff, 7®, poet laureate of the Associated Ne gro Press and a noted extradition lawyer. Huff died following a month long battle with pneumonia in Il linois Research Hospital. His rites were held at Griffin Funeral Home <fa Chicago's southside where he won distinction as "the poor man’s lawyer.” Hoff was not a civil rights' fighter in the sense that we know it today. He walked no picket lines, mounted on ros trum or manned no microphone to bellow the civil rights cause. His rostrum was the courtroom; his other weapon, the pen. When he wss not fighting pe onage eases or trying to pre vent the return to uncertain dixie justice of some unfortun ate fugitives, Huff was busy Penning the poems, in which he poured out his and his race’s longings for freedom. Many of his clients were escapees from pe onage and chain gangs in Dixie, for whom Huff won the right to remain in the and live as free citizens. From their plight it was obvious he wasn’t adequately compensated. Huff came heer in 1908 from Og lethorpe County, Ga. In his native Georgia, Huff had witnessed the evils of peonage first hand and resolved to dedicate his life to fighting it The son of an itenerant preacher and shoemaker he himself hoed and plowed the fields and picked cotton to help finance his early education.
