Saint Augustine's College ha*
been awarded *39,300 by the Na
tional Science Foundation to con
duct a Summer Institute for high
school teachers June 22 through
July 21. 1904. This U the third
grant received within weeks by
the local college.
The grant provides for forty
participants who teach high
school mathematics at the Junior
and senior levels.
Each participant will receive
S7B per week and 4 cento per mile
for travel. An additional sls per
week will be provided for depen
dent* up to a maximum of four.
Objectives of the Institute are
(a) To broaden the subject-mat
ter knowledge of partlciDating
high school teachers and to ac
quaint them with the fundamen
tal newer facto, concept* and
principles at Mathematics. <b> "to
familiarize the participants with
the subject-matter content of the
more recent programs In Mathe
matics in the high schools, and
to enhance their ability to under
stand these programs. <c> To s
dapt this work to the classroom
teaching of the participants, 'd)
To expose the participant* to out
standing men in the discipline of
mathematic*, so that their knowl
edge and experiences will be
broadened to the end that they
will be able to motivate student*
toward careers in mathematics
and science, (e) To supplement
formal lectures with a few care
fully selected field trips, <f) To
discuss under expert guidance,
current problem* and trends in
