BITTEN IN MOUTH AND FACE Miss Alice Beckwith. 724 E. Mar tin Street, informed police offi cers at 7:02 p.m. Wednesday that Miss Norvis Gore, of 1015 E. Davie Street, came to her home and as saulted her by biting her in the mouth and face. She signed a warrant against Miss Gore for assault and battery and the suspect was arreeted and placed in Wake County Jail. REPORTS LARCENY PROM AUTO Ai I:1J P-m. Wednesday, Cart Elrod DeVane. of 781 8. Blount Street stated that be tween S:SS and 8:18 p.m., aamaone removed from his IMI Oldmobile one brief ease, black, ripper-type with han dle* that dip down. Although the brief ease was said to con tain papers, ft was valued at *2# by its owner. The theft took place in front of Dixis Motor Bearings Co. here. FRAUD CHECK ATTEMPT CLAIMED Mias Martha Frances Cooper of Fines Men s Shop, 201 Fayetteville Btreet, told Officer J. B. Upchurch at 8:32 p.m. Wednesday that a young man tried to cash a check In the amount of $lO. but left the store when Miss Cooper started to telephone Wachovia Bank and Trust Company, upon which the check was drawn. It was made payable to Floyd C. Oreen. The bank reported no account in that name. The suspect was described as ap proximately 18 years of age. and neatly dressed in a gray apart coat and slacks. ELDERLY MAN BEATEN. ROBBED Oftfeer J. L. Scott reported at 8:88 p.m. Wednesday: “As 1 was watching a atop rign at Everett Avenue and Chamber lain Street, I heard a scream.” Upon reaching the scene, the Officer found John W. Benton, W, 8888 Everett Avenue, who bad been beaten about the fees and head. Mr. Benton told Scott someone bad knocked at his door, then en tered. taping him they wanted his awntp. "When I told them I had no money," Mr. Benton reported. NABBED FOB HIT AND BUN, CAR THEFT Mm Charles Reed. 80. of the 800 block at Patterson Lane, was arrested on the tot of Banders Motor Company, 1100 block of 8. Blount-Street. at 0:58 pm. Thurs day for hit and run driving and laroeuy of an automobile. Reed, riding a bicycle at the time at his arrest, admitted steal ing the bike earlier the same morning. It was a Western Flyer brand, red with chrome fender*. He is also charged with stealing a 1984 ton Ford from Banders' lot and driving it about 80 feet, where he hit a truck and a parked car. STEALS CLOTHES FROM LINE Mr*. Corine Satterfield. 809 Tower Street, informed Offi cer D. C. Williams at 7:88 a.m. Thursday, that between 4 and 8 p.m. Wednesday someone dob some ledies lingerie from her clothesline. The lingerie was valued at 83. THIEF NETS SIOO IN ROBBERY Owen Morgan. 17 Franklin Ter race, told Officer T. T. Street Jr. and Joseph Winters at 6:50 am. FIGHT WITH WINE BOTTLE J. V. Hedgepeth, 52, and his wife, Mrs. Louise Chavis Hedgepeth. 48, both of 887 1-8 S. Bloodworth St. were jail ed at 4:84 p.m. Friday for en gaging in an affray with a deadly weapon (a wine bottle) at 347 S. Bloodworth St. PRISON ESCAPEE CAUGHT Warden K. P. Bailey notified the Raleigh Police Department at 7:46 p.m. Friday to be on the lookout for Cornell Whitley, 34, of 211 1-2 Cannon Street, who escap ed sometime Friday. Whitley, who is serving a 28 to 30-year prison term for murder, was picked up by police the same night SAME MAN ROBBED AGAIN J. W. Benton, 89. of 2302 Ever ett Avenue, told Officer B. O. Parker at 8:14 p.m. Friday that he had Just gotten out of the hospital after being treated for a beating described earlier in this column. He said two women came to visit him while he was alone in the house. After they left. Mr. Benton said he missed $17.38. which was in two 'bill folds, and a doublebarrel ahot gun. valued at SB6. No trace of the women could be found. POINTS PISTOL. THREATENS TO SHOOT Daniel Edgerton came to the station at 3:30 pm. Friday and .signed a warrant against Sky Lee Allen of the Deluxe Hotel. E. Ca barrus St., stati lg that Allen had pointed a pistol at him and threatened to shoot. Allen was ar rested by Officer L. A. O'Neal for assault with a deadly weapon. SAYS GIRL FRIEND DAMAGED PROPERTY Robert Lee Mitchell, 412 E. Har gett St., came to police headquar ters at 1:15 am. Saturday and re lated the following story to the desk sergeant: He was sitting in his ear with his girlfriend. Miss Maxine Pearce, in the 400 block of E. Davie St. when a few other girls got in the vehicle and urged Mitchell to take them to an undisclosed location. When he refused, an argument en sued and he and his girlfriend got out of the car and walked up the street. Mitchell then met a man named John, who lives in the 800 block of Quarry Street, who consented to going back down the street and driving Mitchell's auto back to him. When John got to tbs ear. the girl* refused to budge and started cutting the seat covers with a knife. Wesley Tharring- Mlss Pearce is alleged to have ton. 849 S. Swain Street, was a witness to the incident. Mit chell signed a warrant against his girlfriend for damage to property and she was arrested by Officer Norman Artis. Samuel Jones of 410 Dakar St, told police at 1:30 am. Saturday, he saw two boys tampering with an automobile at Wade’s Used Car Lot, 228 E. Cabarrus Bt. The pair, Clyde Ruffin, 17, and Tommie Baker. 18. both of 181 1-2 Dover Street, were positively identified by Jones as the rulprftk he saw. Both were jailed. “FINGEBS” AUTO TAMPERERS Reuben Sheppard. 19. of 13 Nash Terrace, informed Ofleers O. C. Pratt and W. A. Thomas at 1:56 a.m. Saturday that he waa stand ing In front of the Elks Home. Davie and Haywood Streets, and a friend 'name unknown) was "having trouble" with another man. whom Sheppard could not Identify. Upon going closer “to see what the trouble was,” young Sheppard said the latter man cut him across his lips and nose. Urse Johnson. 122 E. Lenoir 8t a witness, said he. too. had never seen the suspect before. SHOOTS AT WOMAN. MISSES Mia* Ruby Mae Williams. 19. of 318 S. East Street, told Os- ficers Norman Artis and W. E. Manning at 8:98 a.m. Saturday that Luke gmith, 84. 303 S. Swain Street, shot at her three times with a pistol. Luke admitted the shooting, hut said he had been giving Mte Williams his money and he caught her in bed with an other man. Although the young woman was not hit, there was a bullet hole in her WUUe Williams. 17. of the East Street address, the com piaintant's brother, said he disarmed Smith, who was ar arrested for assault with a deadly weapon. The gun was confiscated. REPORTS BROKEN WIND SHIELD Mrs. Hester Rusher, of 2316 Bed ford Avenue, came to the station Saturday night and signed a war rant against Robert Williams. 17, of S Hydo Terraco for damage to property. Mrs. Rusher stated that her son had been driving her car and Wil liams tossed a brick through the windshield of the 1956 Ford, re sulting in S9O damages. TELLS A CHANGING STORY Officers Ralph Johnson and W. E. Kidd were called to Wake Mo moria 1 Hospital Saturday at 6:07 p.m. by a nurse on duty. There they found Chester McLaurin. 49. of 220 E. Cabarrus Street being treated for a cut on his mouth. “It lokoed as if someone had hit him,” stated the report. Mc- Laurin. however, derlared at first that he was “in an auto mobile accident somewhere,” but changed this story several times. He had been drinking. ' the report said, and the officers * never did ascertain just how he came by the mouth Injury. SAYS GIRL BROKE OUT CAR WINDOW Bobby Williams. 534 E. Davie St., informed Officer L. A. Davie Street, broke out the glass in his 1957 Ford automobile in the 500 block of E. Davie Street. He signed a warrant against her for damage to property. PAIR CHARGED WITH SHOOTING Officers J. C- Putman and Bobby B. Coats were called to Wake Me morial Hospital at 9:01 p.m. Satur day. Upon arrival, they found Major Alston, 29. of 127 Star Street, whe stated that he was shot in the right thigh by Miss Sarah Hodges. 28. of 320 N. State Street. Alston could give no reason for the shooting. The bullet passed through his thigh. Both were jailed under bonds of S2OO each for engaging in an affray with a deadly weapon. The incident took place at 320 N. State Street and officers were unable to locate the pistol. | HITS WOMAN WITH FIST At 1:56 p.m. Saturday. Miss Mable McDuglr. 32, of 319 Fowle Street informed Officers D. A. McLeod and D. C. Wil liams that Ine >1 Judd. 35, of 330 Fowle Btreet, assaulted her by hitting her with his fist. She signed a warrant against Judd for assault and battery and he was jailed under a >IOO bond. The incident occurred at Judd’e home. REFUSES TO PRESS CHARGES Miss Mable Morgan. 37. of 1319 Walnut Street, informed police of ! errs at the Wake Memorial Hos pital Saturday at 5:11 p.m. that a ; man cut her on the hand with a knife or a razor. Although she knew her assailant. Miss Morgan slated she didn't “want to get him in trouble." WHITE MAN CHARGES ASSAULT William Theodore Howell, 47- year-old white man, told po lice at 4:41 p.m. Saturday that .lames S. Mitchell. 51-yew-old Negro employee of Bruce's Bar-B-Q. came into the kitchen of the establishment and ask ed for his pay. Howell said he told Mitchell “to wait a min ute" and Mitchell proceeded to beat him up. breaking his glass es In the process. Howell’s face was also cut. Mitchell, who resides at 413 Can non Street, was arrested and Jail- ed. Die Incident took piece at 2550 S. Saunders Street. SLAPS WOMAN. TEARS CLOTHES OFF Miss Lucy Mae Alston, of 318 Patterson Lane, cams to the po lice station at 14:35 am Sun day and reported Jesse Bel lamy. a roomer In her boose, slapped her ea the left rid* of her head and ter* her clothes off Saturday night. Mate Alston said she spent Saturday night with a friend, adding Bellamy had been drinking when ho came home Saturday night, “broke bad and ran everyone off.” She signed a warrant for assault and battery against Bellamy and h* was arrested and jailed by Officers T. T. Street. Jr. and Joseph Win ters. NAB FIVE IN FREE-FOR-ALL Miss Barbara Jacobs stated at 9:14 p.m. Saturday that James Edward Cooper. 28, of 736 Quarry Street, assaulted her at 3:27 E. Leon Lea Davis. 38. of the tame address, with assault. The warrant was served by Offi cers Norman Artis and James E. <Bobby) Daye. Davis was jailed. The allegcljd assault occurred at Iheir residence. BTEALS CLOTHES AND SHEETS Mrs. Gladys Hinton, 312 Cannon Street, reported Miss Barbara Ev ans, 24, of 607 S. Saunders Street went to her room and stole her clothes and sheets during the week end. She stated that she ssw Miss Pvana wearing her housecoat. The clothes were valued by the com plainant at SIOO. After Mrs. Hinton signed a warrant for larceny. Mias Evans was placed in the Wake County Jail. TWO-WAY RADIO STOLEN Lloyd Jefferies, of 1017 E. Jones Street told police officers that someone stole a two-way radio from hi* 1957 DoSoto, parked at Kings Auto Swrvico. 500 Mock of Down town Boulevard. The set was val ued by the complainant at >125. He said ttie wire* were cut when he made the discovery shout 5:58 p.m. Saturday. SENTENCED ON MULTIPLE RAPS Judge Samuel Petlow* Win born# handed five convictions to John C. Reed in City Court Monday. Reed. 84, es 318 ft Pattern** Lane was sentenced to two years ea the road after Win bora* found him guilty on three charge* es enrelean and reckless driving, hit-and-run and larceny. 19* received ranrarrant 13- month terms for stealing a bicy cle and clothing, end an addi tional year for stealing an ante mobile. to run mnserativsly.
