Alaska has a total population of 175,000. The task of telling the story of Alaska's Negro minority over the yean has been left primarily to the Alaska Spotlight, a 12-year-old weekly newspe published by George C. Anderson, a former Chi cago resident. Anderson points out that almost 5.000 of the states’ 7,000 Negro residents live in Anchorage. Oratorio Society Sings Sun. Ohio (ANP)—A 23-year old ex-Marine reservist who refus ed an order by his draft board to report for active duty because of his Muslim religion, last week was convicted of evading military ser vice in U. S. District Court here. John B. Taylor, member of a Muslim mosque here, was con victed by Judge Frank J. Bat tistl, himself a World War n veteran, and placed under fI,9M appeal bond pending a pre-sentence report Claiming rights as a conscientious objector, Taylor told Judge Bettis ti he could not serve as a combat ant or non-convbatant because he was a member of Elijah Muham mad's sect and added: ‘‘Our religion is Islam. In Eng lish that means peace, and peace is the opposite of war. Taylor’s attorneys, Edward 3. Brown and Gerald 8. Gold, also argued that the draft board refused to consider his plea for exemption as a conscientious objector as re quired by law. However, assistant U. 8. attorney replied that the board did not need to consider Taylor’s plea because It was made after he received the induction notice. On December M. 1941. Draft Board 111 In Akron ordered Taylor to report for active duty on Jan. IS, 1942, because he was not fulfilling his reserve re quirements. Taylor did net report, but on Jan. S. 1942, be filed a conscien tious objector plea. Taylor admitted that he quit at tending Marine Reserve meetings after becoming a Muslim follower in Feb., 1941.
