Martin St. 528-5786 $7 Million Fortune Os Comic Gone CHICAGO (ANP)—Aging cojnic Stephin Fetchit, who made a for tune in Hollywood while playing roles referred to as ‘’Uncle Tom ish" and stereotyped, was hospital ized here last week. He was seriously ill in Cook County Hospital, suffering from a prostate gland disorder, which doc tors said might necessitate abdomi nal surgery. Despite a $7 million fortune he resportedly made in Hollywood, Fetchit was said to be near broke when he entered die hospital here So short was he on funds, that one Chicago columnist—Herb Lyon sent out what amounted to a finan cial SOS for him. Said Lyon: “ . . . Fetchit, the aging famed screen comic, is seriously ill and running out in funds in Ward 43 at County Hospital. He’s a heckuva sweet guy, still has his keen sense of humor, and could use cheer— and help . . .” Fetchit gave his age at 72 when he entered the hospital. However, Dr. George Blaha, medical director of the hospital, said he looked so young, he seemed nearer to 62. Fetohit, whose slow-moving, lazy, scarry roles drew strong protests from the NAACP and other civil rights groups, stated in one of his recent night club acts that he made close to g7 million from his movie roles. He did not explain what happen ed to the fortune, except to say that he lived high. He said he wore SIOO suits and lived in a mansion with servants. Recently, Fetchit switched his nightclub roles to singing, dancing and humor. But the films in which he typified the grovling type Ne gro, always subservient to whites, remained to haunt him. The NAACP recently protested their showing on television because of their bad racial undertones. Honor Roll Released At J. W. Ligon The honor roll for the fifth six weeks at the J. W.
