Man Who Stabbed Wife Shot To Death By Policeman
Woman Attempts To Stop
Suicide Os Her Husband
ST. LOUIS (ANi —A policeman
here last week shot to death a 42-
w 3r-old man who had stabbed his
ife after she tried to stop him
from stabbing himself to death in
i suicide attempt.
He was Joseph M. Stewart,
whs was pronounced dead at
Cite Hospital, after he advanc
ed on him with a metal letter
opener and Ignored the offi
cer's order to halt.
Prewett and another policeman
had gone to the building where
S:ewart lived to investigate the
rharge that he had stabbed his
wife. The manager of the build
ing had called police after Stewart's
wife. Irene, had dashed Into his
• partment. her hands and neck
bleeding, and complained that her
husband had knifed her.
Officer Prewett and his com
panion found the door to Stewart's
thud-floor apartment locked. While
Ire other policeman returned to
tne manager's office to get a pass
key, Stewart swung open the door
and began advancing on Prewtt.
After warning Stewart, the police
man said he fired once on him, but
he kept coming, so he fired two
more (hots.
In the room, the policemen found
evidenoe of a bloody struggle. Two
knives apparently had been uaed,
t small pocket knife and a butcher
knife.

between her and her husband

Mrs. Stewart was treated for

not Stewart’s first apparent suicide
try. Neighbors said two years ago
he broke his legs when he jumped
from his apartment balcony.
He also had a disability discharge
from military service.

Councilman Winters Heard Here
Councilman John W. Winters of
Raleigh was the speaker at Shaw
University’s Annual Awards Day
program in Greenleaf Auditorium
Wednesday, May 13. Winters, who
was recently elected to the Shaw
trustee board, said that Negroes
should atop being satisfied, re-ex
amine themselves, and find out
why they are not making the pro
gress they should.
He stated that for too many
years Ne groes have been consum
ers and not producers. They must
build a sound economy for them
selves Whether recognized or not,
doing a job well makes anyone a
scholar in the truest sense. Negro
es must dedicate themselves to the
task of tearing down the curtain
which separates them from rights
and dignities which they should
enjoy. He declared “I am a dedi
cated fighter for civil rights, but
sit-ins lie-in. and other forms of
protest will never do the entire Job
of creating equality."
The Negro has a job to do
himself In addition to these
methods. Winters predieted
that the Civil Rights Bill will
pass, without too much modifi
cation. but, he added, "this in
