Speaking as “A tribute to women,
a tribute to mothers and a tribute,
to Negro mothers”, Dr. Mays told
the audience that the status of wom
en in this country had always
been a paradox.
"Man. throughout history.” he
said, "is supposed to have loved,
adored and had special affection
for his women. Yet, throughout his
tory, what has been done to domi
nate and to keep women down,
man had done."
He said, women, like the Negro,
nave had to fight for freedom, hi
a long, long struggle even to be
counted as a person. He cited
examples of laws which had been
enacted to deny women their basic
rights.
