DRUNK MAN CHARGED WITH
SHOPLIFTING
Officer Jerry Adams, of the Ra
leigh Police Department, stated at
6 p. m. last Tuesday:
“I was in the 300 block of
Fayetteriile Street and notic
ed a man who appeared to be
drank, walking south in this
block. I walked over to this
man and at this time, a boy
ran np to me and stated that
the subject had stolen some
thing from Walgreen’s Drag
Store. The man then started
running and I gave chase and
caught him at the corner of
Davie and Fayetteville.
“I arrested him for public drun
kenness and he started using pro
fanity. Shortly afterwards, John
White, an employee of Walgreen’s,
walked up and identified the sub
ject as the person who hal “lift
ed” four boxes of chocolate candy
from the store.”
Rayford Gordon, 36, of 314 E.
Hargett Street, was then eharged
with larceny and ldaorderly con
duct, along with the drunk rap.
The eaady, valued at sl3,
was recovered by White. Gor
don had thrown it down on
Exchange St. (between Wil
mington and Fayetteville).
TWO MEN HURT, BOTH
JAILED
Officers W. L. Carter and J. A.
Perry talked to Willie R. Sim
mons, 36, a truck driver from
Charlotte, at 5:01 am. Wednes
day. Simmons stated he stopped
at Edna's All Night Case. W South
Street, for some coffee, when An
gelo McClain. 32. of 717 S. Blood
worth Street, suddenly hit him in
the stomach and took his ciga
rettes.
The truck driver went on to
say that after McClain hit
him, he (Simmons) broke a
■oft drink bottle and threw it
at Angelo, hitting him in the
■nail of the back and cutting

East Street, told Officers Bobby B.
Coats and B. R. Lee at 4:25 a. m.
Wednesday, he was on his way
home from Edna's All-Night Case
and as he was passing the en
trance to the West Campus
of Shaw University when someone
struck him from behind at the
comer of South and Salisbury
Streets, knocking him unconsci
ous.
The weapon used was a 1” by 4”
board.
Winston was treated at the hos
pital for & large bump and lacera
tion on the back of his head.
A witness to the incilent was
Wilbert Ray. 35. of 1333
Branch St., who told the eopa
he heard the blow from a serv
ice station across the street.
Ray stated further that the
assailant wore dark trousers
and a white shirt. Nothing was
taken from Winaton whllo he
was unconscious.
An employee of the service
station, mid he thought he
knew the Negro man who hit
Winston.
COPS CATCH TWO MEN
FIGHTING
Officers Ralph Clay borne
and J. Jordan received a call
to the corner of Haywood St.
and Chavis Park early Wed
nesday.
Upon arrival, they found Al
bert WMtaker, 34. on top of
James Arthur Anthony. Both
were Jailed and eharged with
affray.
MAKES PASS AT GIRL. THEN
BEATS HER UP
Miss Jo Ann Hinton, of 508
Cannon Street, informed Os fers
J. A. Perry and W. L. Carter at
11:49 p. m. Tuesday, that Claude
Barber. 18, of 3334 Cannon Street,
made a pass at her and ahe told
him to stop.
Barber then started beating
he* she stated. He left for a
shm while, then returned with
a shotgun and “said he was
going to kill me,” stated Miss
Hinton. However, the cops ar
rived about that time and ar
rested Barber for assault and •
battery, on a warrant signed
fey Mim Hinton.
The shotgun could not be
found.
YOUTH ASSAULTED ON
SCHOOL GROUNDS

man Artis and James E. (Bobby)
Daye at 1:56 p. m. Thursday, that
Claude Watson, 17. of 928 Rock
Quarry Road, came on the school
grounds and assaulted 15-year-old
William Edward Chavis, of 422 a
Haywood Street with his hands
and fists.
Mr. Brown told officers he was
coming to the station house and
sign a warrant, charging Watson
with trespassing, and said he
would get young Chavis to sign a
warrant against him for assault
and battery.
THREATENS TO KILL WIFE.

Manly Street, informed Officers
W. E. Kidd and Lindsey Godwin
at 3:17 a. m. Friday, her husband,
Ferdee MoCullers. threatened to
kill her with a shotgun, then fir
ed a shot into the floor of their
home.
Mn. MeCuUers signed a
warrant against her husband
for assault with a deadly weap
on and ho waa arrested in the
399 block es W. South Street
in his automobile. H« had the
gun In Ms possession at this
time.
The old single-barrel weap
on’s make and serial number
were rusted out. The gun was
held as evidence.
CHARGED WITH TRESPAS
SING, DAMAGING PROPERTY
William Wood, of 904 Manly
Street, came to police headquar
ters at 3:30 p. m. Wednesday and
signed a warrant against James
MoClain, of 1113 Holman Street,
charging trespassing and damage
to property.
SAYS EMPLOYEE STOLE
SUPPLIES
John Vaden Clifton, of Dillon
Supply Company, 16 S. West St.,
informed two cope at 2:30 p. m.
Thursday, that an employee of
the firm, James Edward Williams,
31. of 2115 Wilder Street, Method,
was caught by him with a half
inch Black and Decker drill, val
ued at $29.
The suspect was questioned and
admitted the theft. After search
ing his house the officers brought
him beck to headquarters for
questioning.
He then admitted stealing other
merchandise on previous occas
ions and pawning it at two Ra
leigh pawn shops for a total of
$65.
These tools were valued at over
$692 by Dillon Supply Company.
Williams was placed in Wake
County Jail, under a S2OO bond,
charged with larceny.
CUT BT THIN MYSTERY MAN
Wiley Harris, 36. of 510 E. Eden
ton St., reported at 12:19 a.m. Sa
turday. a thin young man cut him
on the left arm at the corner of
K. Edenton and 8. East Streets.
Harris said the man demanded
money, but was told, “I don't have
any money to give you.” His at
tacker fled on foot after the as
sault. Harris declared.
The victim was not sure, but
believes he can identify the mys
tery slasher. He was treated at
the hospital for cuts on his arm
and hand.
SAYS FATHER CUT HIM ON
HEAD. FINGERS
John Williams, 23, of 1115* 8.
State Street, told Officers Norman
Artis and James E. (Bobby) Daye
at 11:11 am. Saturday, his father,
James Williams, about 50. cut him
about the head and fingers with a
knife.
Young Williams stated he
and father "got into a fuss”
over Ms father cutting him on
his arm Friday night. The el
der Williams left the house by
way of the back door, “pack
ing” a .33 rifle after the Sa
turday morning cutting.
James Williams was later
apprehended at 619 S. Blount
Street. A warrant was drawn,
charging assault with a dead
ly weapon, and be was Jailed.
The son was treated at the hos
pital for an open cut wound on
the left side of his head and two
cut fingers on the left hand.
DECLARES CAB BACKED INTO
HIM
James Perry Warren. 27-year
old realdent of 708 Jamaica Drive
Informed Officer Bobby B. Coats
at 2:40 a.m. Sunday, that Lincoln
Cab number 6, driven by a man
whose last name is Watson, backed
into him at the comer of S. Blood
worth and E. Davie Streets.
The victim stated Watson vol
unteered to take him to the hos
pital, but a disagreement ensued
when Warren asked Watson tc
take his family also. Warren then
drove his own car to the hospital,
where he was treated for an in
jured right knee.
He was undecided about signing
a warrant against Watson.
The Incident took place on pri
vate property as the cab was back
ing out of a driveway.
MAN AND WIFE FIGHT. CITED
TO COURT
Officers Kidd and Godwin
received a call to 113 Hoke
Street, where they talked to
Herman and Mrs. Elisabeth
Hinton at 3:29 am. Sunday.
Hinton had a cut on the fore
finger of his right hand, which
be said was Inflicted by Mrs.
Hinton.
She admitted cutting her
mate, but said. “He came horns
and storied beath« me.”
Both were cited to Dsmestis
Relations Court. Hinton for
assault and buttery and^Mra
GOOD SAMARITAN ROBBED
Curtis Paice. 701* E. Edenton
Street, informed police offi
cers at 2 ami. Sunday, that he
picked up a young couple at Cha-
cause they had asked him tar a
ride home.
Paige stated he developed car
trouble at the comer of person
and Lenoir Streets, placed his wal
let and watch on the dashboard,
and got out of the car to investi
gate the source of his trouble.
When he got the auto started
again, he drove -the couple to Len
oir Street, near the Chavis Heights
renting office, and last saw the
pair walking toward the office
building. Then he noticed his
watch and wallet were missing.
He identified the robbers as a
boy. about 18 and a girl about 17.
The boy’s last name is believed to
be Jones.
The Benrus 23-jewel gold watch
was valued at S6O. and his brown
leather wallet contained s6l in
currency, along with his driver's
license and other personal papers.
WOMAN BEATEN OVER
CIGARETTE
Miss Louise Smith, of 504 B.
Worth Street, came to police head
quarters at 5:01 pun. Friday and
signed a warrant against Louis
Johnson for assault and battery.
Miss Smith stated she waa
vilting her sister at 818 South
East Street, when Johnson, of
the same address, asked her
for a cigarettte and ahe refus
ed rive him one.
She said Johnson then pre
ceded to hit her and pull her
hair. Johnson was arrested.

326 S. East Street, informed
Officers W. A. Keeter and R.
E. Lee at 6:38 pm. Friday, that
her husband. Thomas Willi
ams. 25, hit her. adding “I was
talking trash to him, wMeb
eanael him to get mad.” The
officers talked to Williams,
who declared his wife fell a
gainst a door. A warrant was
signed by the cops and Willi
ams was Jailed for assault and
battery. Mn. Williams was
treated at Wake Memorial Hos
pital for lacerations of the
scalp.
CLAIMS SOMEBODY STOLE
MONEY
Mrs. Sarah Ann Ferguson. Route
1. Knlghtdale. told two officers at
3:44 p.m. Saturday, that while she
was visiting at 105 Heck Btreet,
someone took 340 from her pock
etbook, which was hanging be
hind the front door.
The complainant added. “Some
children told me two other child
ren took the money and gave it
to their mother.” Mrs. Shirley
Rowland, of 910 E. Jones Street.
The cope talked to Mrs. Row
land and the children. All three
stated they knew nothing about
the missing money.
WOMAN BITTEN ON FINGER

3:45 p. m. Saturday, that while
she was talking to Mrs. Shirley
Rowland (also named above)
about some missing money, Mrs.
Rowland became angry and bit
her on the first finger of her left
hand.
Mrs. Rowland told the oops the
reason she bit Mrs. Ferguson was
that she accused her of having
the money that was missing.
Mrs. Ferguson, who was
treated at Wake Memorial
Hospital for a small laceration
on her hand, signed a warrant
against Mrs. Rowland for as
sault and batttery, and the
cops took her to Jail.
DIDN’T KNOW WHAT HIT HIM
James Driver. 46, 226 S. East
Street, told Officers J. L. Denton
and H. K. Wall at 7:30 p.m. Satur
day, he didn’t know whether he
fell on the sidewalk or if someone
hit him, knocking him there.
Driver, who had been drinking
heavily, had a strong odor of an
Intoxicant on his breath, the re
port stated.
Thomas Williams, 26, a room
mate of Mr. Driver, said Driver
left home with Lansey Caudle of
Wake Forrest, but the cops were
unable to find Caudle.
Williams also stated. “James
Driver has been in a hospital as a
mental patient since 1957.” He
was recently released from the
institution.
Driver was treated at the hos
pital for lacerations on the back
of his head.
SAYS OWN MOTHER STABBED
HIM
John Jones, 17. of 193 N.
Tarboro Road, informed two
polloe officers at 9:37 p. m.
Saturday, his mother. Mrs. Lil
lian Davis, 43. aame address, e
stabbed him in the forehead
with either a knife or fork.
Mrs. Davis said her son
“came in the house and tried
to take over.” She said she
eould not remember what she
hit him with.
A warrant was signed and
Mn. Davit waa placed in Wake
County Jail. Jones was treated
for stab wounds In the fore
head and released.

C. Department of Public Welfare.
Mrs. Sherrill told the parents that
if a child’s mind and heart are not
tapped at the right time they are
lost as resource and the only regret
is that ws do not have mom nur
sery school*
Nursery school, Ate stated, is not
a substitute for family Ufs, but a
supplement. It is a place for physi
cal growth and safety, provide* a
good atmosphere lor emotional
growth and istellectual growth.
Mrs. Sherrill commended the nur
sery staff, parents and also the
board of directors on the excellent
program of the Raleigh Day Nur
sery, a United Fund agency, direct
ed by Mrs. Rosla D. Butler.
The diplomas were presented
by W. A. Rainbow, a member
of. the board of directors. Mr.
Rainbow had die distinction of

Perry and struck at him again,
but the eop struck back, hitting
the drunk man on top of his head
with a black Jack. But Williams,
still not to be outdone, rushed the
cop again and Officer Lassiter
caught him from behind before
three officers could handcuff him.
Williams was treated at Wake
Memorial Hospital for two cuts on
the top of his head, then arrested
and charged with resisting arrest,
assault on an officer, along with
the two charges mentioned above.
CAR BROKEN INTO AT NIGHT
Stanley Whlsnet. 1913 Oakwood
Avenue, reported at 2 am. Tues
day. the “night man" at Sanders
Motor Company said he saw two
men get out of Mr. Whisnet’s ear
and walk away on E. Davie Street.
Whlsnet cheeked his ear and
found a black card holder, valued
at $1 and containing his registra
tion card, insurance card, and oth
er cards were stolen.
The only description the “night i
man” eould give of the thieves
was that both were about 35 years
of age. 1
