BY M. E. GARDNER N. C. STATB A lady railed and said she had been trying to grow a “smoke-tree" in her yard without success. She had planted a second trr=> ana. r was not gro'-’ins a* it should. From what she told me, I assumed that she had done a good Job of planting. I then asked her about the location of the the tree and whether or not It was competing with larger trees for sunlight, moisture and nutrients. She said that it was and that could be the trouble. I suggested that the tree be mop ed to an open location and she said that this could be done. The smoke-tree grows best in a sunny location. This is a woody spreading, rather dense shrub which may reach a height of 15 feet. The attractive, feathery fruit ing panicles give almost the effcet of dense smoke and thus the name.
