Or more than 41J inches in diameter four feet above ground? An American holly has been lo cated In Pamlico County, near New Bern, which meets these specifica tions. Why don’t you look around and see what you can find. 1 have seen some very Urge trees in the SandhilU but have made no meas urements or attempted to determine the age. The Helly Society of Ameri ca la conaldering the tree near New Bern to be the "granddad dy” of all American helliea and a committee has been appointed to investigate the claim. As tor aa I know, then la no way of determining file tax of a plant until it blooms. Soma of the English hollies and Burted’s holly (Ilex cornu t* bur ford!) bear berries in tha absence of male plants but the seede will be sterile. Than may be other reasons why hollies do not produce berries other than the lack of pollination: It may be a male plant end will never bear berries; a female plant with no nearby pollen source; the male and female plants may not bloom at tha same time; cold rainy weather may interfere with pollination; or tha flowers may have been injured by late spring frostk Union Miss.
